Don’t miss your last chance this season to see some of the greatest opera productions ever staged – right here in Reno at your local cinema. The final Metropolitan Opera HD broadcast of the summer will be on Wednesday, July 17 at 1:00 pm. It is Verdi’s tragic story of love and loss set in ancient Egypt at the height of the Pharaohs’ wealth and power.
This Aida is grand opera at its grandest – complete with massive temples, opulent palaces, parading horses, bristling warriors and dancing slaves – all together on the Met stage. Superstars Anna Netrebko and Anita Rachvelishvili headline this remarkable cast as the enslaved Ethiopian Princess, Aida, and her dangerous rival Amneris, Princess of Egypt. As the two princesses, each struggle with their personal passions, their patriotism and their paternal devotions, the larger than life pomp and pageantry of Egypt surrounds them. The great warrior, Radames, whom they both love, is sung by Aleksandrs Antonenko.
Truly a feast for both the eyes and ears – watch and listen as Radames sings of his love for Aida in the remarkable tenor aria, “Celeste Aida;” as Aida is wracked with guilt when she prays for his safe return from battle against her own father in “Ritorna vincitor, ” and then as she longs for her lost homeland in “O Patria Mia.” And finally, cry with all three as Radames and Aida face death together in a sealed tomb while Amneris prays for peace above them. This truly is opera at its grandest.
Aida plays at the Century Riverside Theater, July 17 at 1:00 PM.
