Art Trek for March 24th, 2023

Art Trek for March 24th. This week on Art Trek, we check out the photography of Mark Vollmer, a new exhibit at Lilley Museum, a new downtown mural, and much more. We also took a stroll around the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, to find some artistic treasures.

Mark Vollmer at the Nevada Historical Society

Our first stop was one of Reno’s favorite photographers, Mark Vollmer. He is showing some of his work at the Nevada Historical Society. Vollmer’s landscape photography is beautiful and inspirational. If you ever have a chance to hear Vollmer speak about his work, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity; he is a great storyteller.

Vollmer’s work will be displayed until July 29th at the Nevada Historical Society, 1650 N Virginia St, Reno.

Nevada Historical Society

While checking out Vollmer’s photographs, look around the Nevada Historical Society. There are many fun exhibits with items from Reno’s past that will entertain and educate.

Linda Alterwitz Self Without Interpretation at the Lilley Museum

Linda Alterwitz’s exhibit Self Without Interpretation is a complex and stunning three-year project involving 84 participants, EEG sessions, deep reflection, and thoughtful images. When you see Self Without Interpretation, I recommend that you read Alterwitz’s notes and explanations of her process in creating the show.

Take a look at the photos of the show, and you will see a glimpse of the magic Alterwitz created.

Self Without Interpretation will be on view through May 13th, 2023, in the Lilley Museum at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Strolling around UNR

Michelle and I like to walk around the campus of UNR and see what we can find; there is a lot to discover.

Here are a few photos of what we discovered.

Creative Expressions Stairwell

There is a Creative Expressions Stairwell tucked away in the Church of Fine Arts that is worth the effort to find, not that it is hidden but not easily found.

Here are some photos that I am sure will whet your appetite for discovery.

BFA Thesis Exhibition, Jordyn Owens

Many hallways have students’ work on display. It is worth walking through the hallways to discover these places of inspiration.

Here are some photos of Jordyn Owens’s BFA Thesis Exhibition.

New Mural in Downtown

A new mural is underway at the  National Bowling Stadium, technically three, as three walls are slated for painting. Rafael Blanco has begun the mural’s 1st wall and will finish it this weekend. The other two walls will be painted in the next few months.

Here is a link to the press release from the City of Reno: reno.gov/Home/Components/News

A native of Spain, Blanco received his MFA at UNR in 2013. Blanco has created many murals around Reno and on the campus of UNR. We discovered one of these UNR murals as we explored the campus, and it is under the Strolling around UNR section of this article; see if you can guess which one it is.
