Bria Skonberg at the Hawkins Amphitheater
Monday night for the Free Music Series at Hawkins Amphitheater featured New York-based Canadian Signer Bria Skonberg. She and her 4 piece ensemble put on a great show for the almost full house. I think the only reason it wasn’t a full house like it has been, is because of the threat of rain and thunderstorms.
Bria has been a force in the new generation with her bold horn melodies and smoky vocals, and adventurous concoctions of classic and new. Noted as a millennial “shaking up the jazz world,” (Vanity Fair), Bria Skonberg has played festivals and stages the world over.
She is an avid educator and supporter of public school opportunities, giving numerous workshops and concerts for students of all ages. Bria has been a faculty member at the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Camp (2008- present). She is also co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Festival.
2017 JUNO winner Vocal Jazz Album of the Year
“Ms. Skonberg has become the shining hope of hot jazz, on the strength of a clarion trumpet style indebted to Louis Armstrong, a smooth purr of a singing voice inspired by Anita O’Day and the wholesome glow of youth”
Nate Chinen, NY Times.
