SUMMARY:Colors of Work
DESCRIPTION:Colors of Work is an inspiring exhibition featuring artwork by student-intern artists from the Transition Academy\, which operates through the Washoe County School District. The artists displayed in this exhibition are all young adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities who are actively preparing their next steps through vocational training\, career exploration\, and workplace readiness. \nAt Transition Academy\, interns participate in supported\, hands-on learning experiences across a variety of industries\, visiting local businesses and job sites as they build practical skills and confidence. Each day\, the interns develop independence and self-advocacy through their training and engagement with their peers. \nUnder the guidance of Anne Hunter\, a Teaching Artist with Arts for All Nevada\, these interns have created a vibrant collection of mixed media works. Combining painting\, photography\, and other materials\, their pieces reflect their personal experiences of work - what it feels like to learn\, to contribute\, and build a meaningful future. \nEach artwork offers a unique perspective on livelihood: what motivates them\, what challenges them\, and what brings them pride. Colors of Work is both a celebration of creativity and a powerful expression of identity\, purpose\, and independence. \nTo learn more about what Arts for all Nevada offers\, please visit: https://www.artsforallnevada.org/ \nGallery West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:"At the Heart of Nevada: Basin and Range”
DESCRIPTION:Curated By: Julian Kilker\, Checko Salgado\, and Paula Garrett \nFebruary 23rd- April 17th\, 2026 \nReception: Wednesday\, March 4th\, 2026\, 5pm-7pm \nOn the ten-year anniversary of the Basin and Range National Monument\, three friends curated a documentary photography and video exhibit documenting this remote region of Nevada—one located several hours by car north of Las Vegas and Southeast of Reno. The monument features 1\,100 square miles of spectacular undeveloped mountains and valleys in southeastern Nevada\, and its protected status preserves geological and historical features for future generations while continuing to provide access for recreation\, grazing\, and military training. \nThe collaboration behind this exhibit echoes the cooperation among Nevadan volunteers\, artists\, researchers\, locals\, and visitors who enjoy and help protect our state’s wealth. Basin and Range National Monument is the result of an innovative collaboration among multiple stakeholders. At the Heart of Nevada parallels this creation\, focusing on multiple uses of the land and collaborations among these stakeholders. Among the photographs and videos by multiple contributors are representations of geology and history\, ranching\, volunteering\, recreation\, and artistic and military engagement. Its curators\, board members of the non-profit organization Friends of Basin and Range\, help ensure protection of the ecological\, cultural\, historic\, and recreational resources of the Monument area through community engagement\, advocacy\, interpretive and educational programming\, support of academic research\, site stewardship\, and restoration efforts. \nFor more information about the Basin & Range National Monument visit https://www.friendsofbasinandrange.com. \nThe Metro Gallery\, located on the first floor of City of Reno City Hall\, is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:“Reno Mug Shots: vessels\, possibly made for drinking\, inspired by Reno” The Wedge Ceramic Studios
DESCRIPTION:The artists at the Wedge Ceramics Studio are thrilled to present Reno Mug Shots: vessels\, possibly made for\ndrinking\, inspired by Reno. Making mugs is something all ceramic artists take comfort\, joy\, and pride in\, each\nfor their own reasons. This is not unlike living in Reno and Northern Nevada\, where we delight in Reno each in\nour own way\, making it our own\, stamping it with our signature. But our individual marks\, left on mugs\, left on\nour town\, can really only be understood when seen as a whole\, as if we’re all working towards the same\nunknown goal.\nOur mugs represent what Reno means to us\, the storied past\, shared present\, and an always uncertain but\ncollaborative and communal future. Fill your cup up with whatever you want\, for what you get out of Reno is a\nmagnification and reflection of what you put in.\n“The Wedge Ceramics Studio was started in September 2011 by Sutter and Samantha Stremmel. Moving back\nto Reno after graduating from Montana State University\, they bemoaned the fact there was no place to play with\nclay unless you were currently institutionalized in school or classes.”\n“Over a decade later\, we have become an institution ourselves. We are an ever growing\, always dynamic\,\nentropic studio in a 5000 sq. ft. industrial warehouse turned ceramics studio. Sam and Sutter now work together\nto operate their respective\, neighboring businesses\, the Wedge and Sierra Water\, an indoor plant shop next door\nin the warehouse at 2055 Dickerson Rd. We are excited to be a part of Dickerson Road’s family of artists.”\nTo learn more about what The Wedge offers\, please visit: https://www.thewedgeceramics.com/\nGallery East\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno.\nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries

SUMMARY:“Postcards From the Edge (of Nevada)” Our Center Reno
DESCRIPTION:Reno\, NV- A community art gallery featuring queer artists and their words of hope.\nPostcards From the Edge (of Nevada) is a community-driven exhibition that invites queer artists and allies to\nreflect on place\, identity\, and survival at the margins. Using the humble postcard as both artwork and message\,\nthis exhibition transforms personal expression into a shared act of connection—one that crosses distance\,\nisolation\, and silence.\nAt the edge of geography\, culture\, and visibility\, queer communities in Nevada have long cultivated resilience\nthrough creativity\, humor\, tenderness\, and mutual support. This exhibition honors those lived experiences by\ncreating space for artists of all backgrounds to speak directly to the queer community—past\, present\, and\nfuture—through words and images meant to be held\, sent\, and remembered.\nPostcards From the Edge (of Nevada) is not just a collection of artworks\, but a living archive of care. Each\npostcard becomes a gesture of solidarity\, a reminder that even at the edge\, we are not alone.\n“At Our Center\, we are dedicated to creating and supporting inclusive programs for the entire LGBTQ+\ncommunity. This includes offering support groups for youth and adult trans members\, community groups for\nseniors\, and prevention-focused initiatives.”\nTo learn more about what Our Center offers\, please visit: https://ourcenterreno.org/\nGallery West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno.\nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries

SUMMARY:TMCC Portfolio Emphasis Showcase Austin Arazosa\, Aileen Huerta\, Sean McHaney
DESCRIPTION:November 17 – December 23\, 2025 \nWe invite you to explore the Truckee Meadows Community College Portfolio Emphasis Showcase. “3 Visions” features a series of figurative works created by TMCC Art 298 Portfolio Emphasis students Austin Arazosa\, Aileen Huerta\, and Sean McHaney. Each artist presents a unique perspective\, using painting and drawing to investigate identity\, perception\, and the complexities of human expression. Together\, their works highlight the diverse approaches and voices emerging from TMCC’s Visual Arts program\, offering viewers an opportunity to experience three distinct artistic visions united by a shared focus on figurative practice.\nSean McHaney on their work: “In the series 5 and 5\, I explore the fragile line between beauty and danger. My subjects are women\, depicted in vulnerable poses\, placed into ominous environments that turn beauty into something both admired and threatened. By repeating the same two images across five different mediums\, I amplify and condemn the tension between desire and fear.”\nAileen Huerta on their work: “En Tu Ausencia” (in your absence) is a series of acrylic paintings exploring the emotional impact of growing up with an absent parent. Through the use of small abstract line work and color symbolism\, I transform memories of loneliness into dream-like reflections of acceptance. This series represents my journey towards healing and finding closure in what once felt incomplete.\nTogether\, these three artists create a multifaceted exploration of reality\, emotion\, and connection. The Portfolio Emphasis Showcase is a testament to their individual visions and artistic growth. We encourage you to immerse yourself in their work and experience the unique narrative each artist conveys through their creative practices.\nGallery West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:The Honeycomb Project
DESCRIPTION:The Honeycomb Project\nCity of Reno City Hall\nMetro Gallery\nSeptember 22- November 14\, 2025\nReception: Thursday\, October 2\, 2025 \nThe Honeycomb Project: A metaphor for interconnectedness\, collaboration and strength found within community.\nCandace Garlock is an artist and arts educator working at the Truckee Meadows Community College. She launched the Honeycomb Project in 2024\, inspired by the natural\, yet complex shape and supportive structure of honeycomb. Since its humble start\, the project has grown to a collection of around 900 hexagonal panels\, adorned by over 500 individual artists\, across 14 states.\nAs Garlock sees it\, “at first glance\, a honeycomb may appear to be a simple geometric structure\, but a closer examination unveils its intricate design and remarkable precision. Composed of countless hexagonal cells\, each one functions seamlessly within the whole\, fulfilling specific purposes\, whether it’s storing honey\, providing a safe haven for the queen bee\, or nurturing the brood. This complexity serves as a powerful metaphor for community dynamics\, where individuals unite\, each contributing unique talents\, skills\, and roles that enhance the collective’s well-being and growth. This interconnectedness is built upon relationships\, shared experiences\, and common goals\, forming a robust foundation for resilience and development. The Honeycomb Project embodies these vital connections\, celebrating our ties to one another through our environment and shared spaces.” \nThe images and writings that comprise the Honeycomb Project are published in 6 art catalogs and can also be viewed on the blog: https://honeycomb2025.blogspot.com. \nThe Metro Gallery\, located on the first floor of City of Reno City Hall\, is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:Your Skin is a Kaleidoscope Curated by City Artist\, Jordyn Rae Owens & Of the Sol Collective
DESCRIPTION:July 21- September 12\, 2025 Reception: Thursday\, August 14th from 5 pm-7 pm \nYour Skin is a Kaleidoscope invites local Black\, Indigenous\, and Artists of Color to reflect on\nthe breadth of their stories and experiences\, whether lived or ancestral\, beautiful or\npainful\, and respond to the idea with a piece of art that communicates insights and\nperspectives that arise from this introspection\n“Our skin carries the scars and bruises of our past. But\, our skin is abundant. It has the\npower to regenerate and repair old wounds. People often mistake our skin for being\nmonotone\, different shades of one color. But\, if you pay enough attention\, you’ll see how\nthe light dances and refracts off our skin\, like radiant blessings from our ancestors. And if\nyou look closely\, for every red\, violet\, blue\, green\, or yellow hue\, there is a breadth of\nstories\, histories\, and lessons transmuted from the past to help us create brighter\ntomorrows.”\n“Of the Sol” is a collective of Black\, Indigenous\, and Artists of Color cultivating an\nintersectional space for all BIPOC artists. The goal of the collective is to foster autonomy\,\nrepresentation\, inclusivity\, equity\, and accessibility for BIPOC artists. The show runs from May 19 – July 11\, 2025\, showcasing fine art photography and collage by Owens that offers a deeply personal and transformative reflection of her experience as a mixed race Black and Filipino woman born and raised in Reno. Her art practice is a contemplative process in which she utilizes photographic mediums to explore the past\, present\, and future self. By exploring her inner world\, her artwork demonstrates the powerful effects of self-reflection and the impact it has on the evolution of identity.\nFormer Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova describes that Owens’ art “reflect her journey of introspection and identity\, exploring the intersections of race\, place\, and personal history. Jordyn’s ability to convey such narratives through visual mediums makes her a standout artist and a strong representative of the dynamic and diverse culture we are working to build in Reno.” \nOwens won the Award for Excellence in Fine Art Photography at the Reno Tahoe International Art Show in 2022 and 2023 and was a finalist in 2024. She has also been the recipient of the Nevada Arts Council Artist Project Grant. She has previously had solo exhibitions at the Holland Project and North Valley’s Library in addition to numerous group shows.
