SUMMARY:TMCC Portfolio Emphasis Showcase Austin Arazosa\, Aileen Huerta\, Sean McHaney
DESCRIPTION:November 17 – December 23\, 2025 \nWe invite you to explore the Truckee Meadows Community College Portfolio Emphasis Showcase. “3 Visions” features a series of figurative works created by TMCC Art 298 Portfolio Emphasis students Austin Arazosa\, Aileen Huerta\, and Sean McHaney. Each artist presents a unique perspective\, using painting and drawing to investigate identity\, perception\, and the complexities of human expression. Together\, their works highlight the diverse approaches and voices emerging from TMCC’s Visual Arts program\, offering viewers an opportunity to experience three distinct artistic visions united by a shared focus on figurative practice.\nSean McHaney on their work: “In the series 5 and 5\, I explore the fragile line between beauty and danger. My subjects are women\, depicted in vulnerable poses\, placed into ominous environments that turn beauty into something both admired and threatened. By repeating the same two images across five different mediums\, I amplify and condemn the tension between desire and fear.”\nAileen Huerta on their work: “En Tu Ausencia” (in your absence) is a series of acrylic paintings exploring the emotional impact of growing up with an absent parent. Through the use of small abstract line work and color symbolism\, I transform memories of loneliness into dream-like reflections of acceptance. This series represents my journey towards healing and finding closure in what once felt incomplete.\nTogether\, these three artists create a multifaceted exploration of reality\, emotion\, and connection. The Portfolio Emphasis Showcase is a testament to their individual visions and artistic growth. We encourage you to immerse yourself in their work and experience the unique narrative each artist conveys through their creative practices.\nGallery West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:The Honeycomb Project
DESCRIPTION:The Honeycomb Project\nCity of Reno City Hall\nMetro Gallery\nSeptember 22- November 14\, 2025\nReception: Thursday\, October 2\, 2025 \nThe Honeycomb Project: A metaphor for interconnectedness\, collaboration and strength found within community.\nCandace Garlock is an artist and arts educator working at the Truckee Meadows Community College. She launched the Honeycomb Project in 2024\, inspired by the natural\, yet complex shape and supportive structure of honeycomb. Since its humble start\, the project has grown to a collection of around 900 hexagonal panels\, adorned by over 500 individual artists\, across 14 states.\nAs Garlock sees it\, “at first glance\, a honeycomb may appear to be a simple geometric structure\, but a closer examination unveils its intricate design and remarkable precision. Composed of countless hexagonal cells\, each one functions seamlessly within the whole\, fulfilling specific purposes\, whether it’s storing honey\, providing a safe haven for the queen bee\, or nurturing the brood. This complexity serves as a powerful metaphor for community dynamics\, where individuals unite\, each contributing unique talents\, skills\, and roles that enhance the collective’s well-being and growth. This interconnectedness is built upon relationships\, shared experiences\, and common goals\, forming a robust foundation for resilience and development. The Honeycomb Project embodies these vital connections\, celebrating our ties to one another through our environment and shared spaces.” \nThe images and writings that comprise the Honeycomb Project are published in 6 art catalogs and can also be viewed on the blog: https://honeycomb2025.blogspot.com. \nThe Metro Gallery\, located on the first floor of City of Reno City Hall\, is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:Your Skin is a Kaleidoscope Curated by City Artist\, Jordyn Rae Owens & Of the Sol Collective
DESCRIPTION:July 21- September 12\, 2025 Reception: Thursday\, August 14th from 5 pm-7 pm \nYour Skin is a Kaleidoscope invites local Black\, Indigenous\, and Artists of Color to reflect on\nthe breadth of their stories and experiences\, whether lived or ancestral\, beautiful or\npainful\, and respond to the idea with a piece of art that communicates insights and\nperspectives that arise from this introspection\n“Our skin carries the scars and bruises of our past. But\, our skin is abundant. It has the\npower to regenerate and repair old wounds. People often mistake our skin for being\nmonotone\, different shades of one color. But\, if you pay enough attention\, you’ll see how\nthe light dances and refracts off our skin\, like radiant blessings from our ancestors. And if\nyou look closely\, for every red\, violet\, blue\, green\, or yellow hue\, there is a breadth of\nstories\, histories\, and lessons transmuted from the past to help us create brighter\ntomorrows.”\n“Of the Sol” is a collective of Black\, Indigenous\, and Artists of Color cultivating an\nintersectional space for all BIPOC artists. The goal of the collective is to foster autonomy\,\nrepresentation\, inclusivity\, equity\, and accessibility for BIPOC artists. It’s a space of\nreclamation and revival\, and we work towards collective action through the media of art.\nLocated on the first floor of City of Reno City Hall\, The Metro Gallery is one of three galleries\noperated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:“Monumental Masks” Students of O’Brien Middle School
DESCRIPTION:Monumental Masks is an exhibition where students have been presented with the opportunity to allow their imagination to run wild. Each student was allowed to choose whatever materials they needed to create masks that either encapsulate their identity or tell a story. What they created were unique\, eye-catching pieces of art that showcase the imagination and intricacies of the mind of a child.\nEach mask evokes a diversity of human emotions and experiences. A total of 15 students came together to capture their individual essence through renditions of personal expression and self-discovery. There were no guidelines placed upon the creation of these masks\, which allowed there to be a true representation of authenticity in how students wanted to present themselves through their art.\nOur curated logo is meant to represent Peavine Mountain which is the most prominent mountain in our surrounding area here in Reno. On it\, you will see a variety of masks that are meant to represent the impact each person can have on their hometown with the ability to create with no limitations. The hope is to have this exhibition be a steppingstone for these young artists to become empowered and leave a permanent\, monumental impact on the world around them. \nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries

SUMMARY:Waterways - Art Exhibition & Reception with Ashley Gottlieb
DESCRIPTION:“Waterways” is an exhibition of new work by Reno-based artist Ashley Gottlieb. The exhibition runs from November 14-December 2024 at the Northwest Reno Library Art Gallery in Reno\, NV. \nSave the date for the reception: Saturday\, November 23 @ 1-2:30 pm. I hope you’ll join me! \nLearn more about the artist and her work at http://www.ashleygottlieb.com \nABOUT THE SHOW: \n“Waterways” is an abstract journey through landscapes near water and an exploration of the profound emotions I feel when in water’s presence. The paintings in this collection transport viewers to rivers\, lakes\, oceans\, creeks\, waterfalls\, and other aqueous realms. With a colorful palette and my playful abstract style\, I endeavor to convey my reverence for and love of water. \nNature offers myriad wonders that inspire and fascinate\, yet few evoke such powerful emotions as the sight and sound of water. It possesses a captivating duality\, capable of soothing our souls while also holding the potential for immense power and destruction. Beneath its surface lies a world of mystery\, an enigmatic realm that beckons exploration and contemplation. Water pulses with a vitality that mirrors that of a living being\, infusing us with a heightened sense of aliveness in its presence. \nA deep sense of awe and humility washes over me in the presence of water. I believe this is one of the most moving combinations of feelings that one can experience. I hope that these works will serve as a catalyst for introspection\, inviting viewers to reflect upon their own encounters with water and within these paintings may they find their way to a moment of serenity amidst the chaos of daily life. \n~Ashley Gottlieb
