SUMMARY:“Monumental Masks” Students of O’Brien Middle School
DESCRIPTION:Monumental Masks is an exhibition where students have been presented with the opportunity to allow their imagination to run wild. Each student was allowed to choose whatever materials they needed to create masks that either encapsulate their identity or tell a story. What they created were unique\, eye-catching pieces of art that showcase the imagination and intricacies of the mind of a child.\nEach mask evokes a diversity of human emotions and experiences. A total of 15 students came together to capture their individual essence through renditions of personal expression and self-discovery. There were no guidelines placed upon the creation of these masks\, which allowed there to be a true representation of authenticity in how students wanted to present themselves through their art.\nOur curated logo is meant to represent Peavine Mountain which is the most prominent mountain in our surrounding area here in Reno. On it\, you will see a variety of masks that are meant to represent the impact each person can have on their hometown with the ability to create with no limitations. The hope is to have this exhibition be a steppingstone for these young artists to become empowered and leave a permanent\, monumental impact on the world around them. \nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries

SUMMARY:Waterways - Art Exhibition & Reception with Ashley Gottlieb
DESCRIPTION:“Waterways” is an exhibition of new work by Reno-based artist Ashley Gottlieb. The exhibition runs from November 14-December 2024 at the Northwest Reno Library Art Gallery in Reno\, NV. \nSave the date for the reception: Saturday\, November 23 @ 1-2:30 pm. I hope you’ll join me! \nLearn more about the artist and her work at http://www.ashleygottlieb.com \nABOUT THE SHOW: \n“Waterways” is an abstract journey through landscapes near water and an exploration of the profound emotions I feel when in water’s presence. The paintings in this collection transport viewers to rivers\, lakes\, oceans\, creeks\, waterfalls\, and other aqueous realms. With a colorful palette and my playful abstract style\, I endeavor to convey my reverence for and love of water. \nNature offers myriad wonders that inspire and fascinate\, yet few evoke such powerful emotions as the sight and sound of water. It possesses a captivating duality\, capable of soothing our souls while also holding the potential for immense power and destruction. Beneath its surface lies a world of mystery\, an enigmatic realm that beckons exploration and contemplation. Water pulses with a vitality that mirrors that of a living being\, infusing us with a heightened sense of aliveness in its presence. \nA deep sense of awe and humility washes over me in the presence of water. I believe this is one of the most moving combinations of feelings that one can experience. I hope that these works will serve as a catalyst for introspection\, inviting viewers to reflect upon their own encounters with water and within these paintings may they find their way to a moment of serenity amidst the chaos of daily life. \n~Ashley Gottlieb

SUMMARY:“Slow Draw” Jessica Hayworth Kelly Chorpening Otis Poisson Curated By: Chris Lanier (City Artist)
DESCRIPTION:The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Slow Draw” a group exhibition with work by Jessica Hayworth\, Kelly Chorpening\, and Otis Poisson. Curated by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier\, the show runs from September 30 – November 22\, 2024\, with the reception on Tuesday\, October 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7pm. \n“Slow Draw” is a play on the Western-flavored phrase “quick draw\,” and nods to the various cultural movements grouped under the adjective “slow” – slow food\, slow fashion\, and so on. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. Particularly in the current visual environment\, where Artificial Intelligence can produce detailed images in a matter of seconds. there is a particular value to images made – deliberately\, thoughtfully\, and slowly – by a human hand. \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is accessible through City Hall’s ground floor entrance on Virginia Street. Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage (NW corner of First St. & Center St.). Parking Validation can be found inside City Hall.

SUMMARY:“All That Glitters” Beck Baumann
DESCRIPTION:Metro Gallery hosts sequin sculpture artist Beck Baumann “All That Glitters.” The body of work exhibits over 12 sequin sculpture pieces from varying projects spanning over 3 years. Each piece captures your eyes through the vibrant use of color and sparkle that depicts everyday objects from an ear-shaped handbag\, all the way to delectable food plates. \nJuly 29 – September 20\, 2024 Reception: Tuesday\, August 27\, 2024\, 5 – 7pm \n“Sequins are everywhere. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder.\nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art.\nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. After completing her degree\, she spent several years writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel. Then she moved onto ‘painting’ with seed beads and yarn\, which became the gateway for working with sequins\, her primary medium.\nbeckbaumann.com \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:Human Kindness - Graphite Illustrations
DESCRIPTION:Artist reception at the Coffeebar on Mt. Rose Street\, Reno.\nMy original graphite illustrations and prints will adorn the walls of Coffeebar on Mt. Rose St. all July-August. Experience my originals and specially crafted pieces\, enhancing the ambience for this wonderful space. Join us for the Opening Reception on July 13\, 4-6 pm. Let’s celebrate art together\, or simply enjoy an exceptional cup of coffee or glass of wine\, and great conversation.\n——–\nHuman Kindness \nAs a pencil illustrator captivated by the enigmatic allure of the human face\, I embark on a journey of introspection and exploration with each stroke of my pencil. Faces\, to me\, are not merely physical manifestations but profound vessels of emotion\, stories\, and identity. I seek to convey these depths of human expression\, unraveling the intricacies of joy\, sorrow\, resilience\, and vulnerability with each etch upon every plane and strive to create moments of stillness\, awareness\, and contemplation through my portraits. \nMy artistic process is one of reverence\, gratitude\, patience\, perseverance\, and courage as I observe and interpret the subtle nuances of expression that define each individual. In a world fraught with uncertainty and division\, I hope my art has a transformative ability to transcend barriers\, foster empathy\, spark conversations\, provoke introspection\, and ignite a deeper sense of shared humanity and human kindness.

SUMMARY:“Backyard Radiance: Photos and Videos of the Marvelous/Mundane" by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier
DESCRIPTION:The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Backyard Radiance\,” a solo exhibition by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier. \nThe show runs from March 25 – May 17\, 2024\, showcasing photographs by Lanier that embrace both the marvelous and the mundane.\nThe artist reception will take place on Tuesday\, April 2\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nCity of Reno Poet Laureate\, Jesse James Ziegler\, will join Lanier in a collaborative and poetic performance. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public. \nOver the past twelve years\, Lanier has been posting almost daily photos from his life on Instagram\, converting it to a mobile gallery (of sorts). For this exhibition\, he draws from this archive\, bringing the digital photographs back into the physical realm. Lanier’s images often feel like echoes\, something that seems both familiar and new. Each one is well composed\, providing an enjoyable artistic image. Rather than alienating us through aesthetic formality\, the familiarity of the ordinary creeps in\, inviting us to reflect on our own marvelous/mundane moments. \nAs a window into this process\, Lanier shares\, “I intend “Backyard Radiance” to be a very local\, very idiosyncratic homage to the ordinary\, the day-to-day – which\, when attended to with a certain intention or reverence\, becomes something perhaps a little marvelous.”\nChris Lanier is a Teaching Professor of Digital Art at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, teaching both at UNR Lake Tahoe and the Reno campus. He has worked in a variety of media\, including multimedia performance\, digital animation\, web production\, and comics. His work has been displayed\, performed and projected in New York\, San Francisco\, Japan\, Canada\, Britain\, Mexico and Serbia; his animation has screened at Sundance\, and won the Grand Prize for Internet Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/chrislanier

SUMMARY:"Bigger Than Us" TMCC Painting and Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: December 18\, 2023 – February 9\, 2024 Reception: Thursday\, December 21\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the growth and work of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) students over the course of the Fall semester. \n“Bigger Than Us” features TMCC students from Art 231 Painting I and Art 211 Ceramics I. Under the guidance of professors Candace Garlock and Rossitza Todorova\, this exhibition unfolds as an exploration of themes that transcend the individual and embrace the universal. \nThe guiding theme\, “Bigger Than Us\,” challenged each artist to delve into introspection and contemplation\, urging them to consider their place in the vast tapestry of existence. Professor Garlock and Todorova fostered an environment where students grapple with notions of connection\, grief\, and hope\, translating these profound reflections into captivating works of art. \nThroughout this exhibition\, you will see the diverse perspectives of emerging artists as they are influenced by nature\, the companionship of animals\, and the vastness of the universe—all woven into the fabric of each artist’s narrative. These thematic threads invite you to reflect on the collective human experience. \n“Bigger Than Us” is a collective journey through the minds and hearts of emerging artists grappling with the universal questions that shape our existence. We invite you to engage with the artwork\, contemplate the themes\, and join us in exploring the boundless dimensions of their artistic spirit. \nThe Fine Arts program at TMCC offers several areas of visual art emphasis for students\, including art appreciation\, art history\, and studio art courses in ceramics\, digital media\, drawing\, figure drawing\, painting\, photography\, printmaking\, and sculpture. SUMMARY:"Windows to the Soul; More Than Portraits" Reception
DESCRIPTION:Metro Gallery hosts watercolor portrait artist James Gayles. Windows to the Soul; More than Portraits is a love letter to the City of Reno\, dedicated to the Memory of Oliver X. The body of work shows a command of watercolor that clearly comes from a real relationship and comfort with the materials. Each piece draws you in deeper\, particularly through the eyes which James notes “are indeed the windows to the soul.” A central theme of James’ work is the search for cultural identity. This is evidenced in his portraits of African cultures and people of the African Diaspora. \n“I am committed to cultivating artists\, liberating experiences of the African and Black Diaspora through art and sharing my work with the world. My vision is to put beautiful\, uplifting\, and enlightening work out in the world and to inspire young and upcoming artists. I see art as a vehicle to educate\, by portraying ancestral icons who youth and all people can be proud of and admire.” -James Gayles \nJames Gayles is an Emmy Award-winning graphic designer and artist who specializes in watercolor portraits. James attended Pratt Institute in New York. James has won public art commissions from cities across the US and Asia. He is committed to cultivating artists and sharing his work. The artist currently lives and works in Reno\, Nevada. \nhttps://www.jamesgayles.com/ \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno.
