DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: December 18\, 2023 – February 9\, 2024 Reception: Thursday\, December 21\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the growth and work of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) students over the course of the Fall semester. \n“Bigger Than Us” features TMCC students from Art 231 Painting I and Art 211 Ceramics I. Under the guidance of professors Candace Garlock and Rossitza Todorova\, this exhibition unfolds as an exploration of themes that transcend the individual and embrace the universal. \nThe guiding theme\, “Bigger Than Us\,” challenged each artist to delve into introspection and contemplation\, urging them to consider their place in the vast tapestry of existence. Professor Garlock and Todorova fostered an environment where students grapple with notions of connection\, grief\, and hope\, translating these profound reflections into captivating works of art. \nThroughout this exhibition\, you will see the diverse perspectives of emerging artists as they are influenced by nature\, the companionship of animals\, and the vastness of the universe—all woven into the fabric of each artist’s narrative. These thematic threads invite you to reflect on the collective human experience. \n“Bigger Than Us” is a collective journey through the minds and hearts of emerging artists grappling with the universal questions that shape our existence. We invite you to engage with the artwork\, contemplate the themes\, and join us in exploring the boundless dimensions of their artistic spirit. \nThe Fine Arts program at TMCC offers several areas of visual art emphasis for students\, including art appreciation\, art history\, and studio art courses in ceramics\, digital media\, drawing\, figure drawing\, painting\, photography\, printmaking\, and sculpture. Most studio classes are taught at introductory and intermediate levels.\nGalleries West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. It is our pleasure to display the artistic accomplishments and showcase the exceptional talent and creativity of our extensive City of Reno family.\nThe work will be juried by a group of local artists and arts professionals\, who give awards in Youth\, Amateur\, and Professional categories. We also have a “People’s Choice” award that you can vote on! Visit the exhibition and fill out the online survey. Awards will be given at the exhibition reception on Tuesday\, December 19\, 5-7 PM. \nAbout the Metro Gallery:\nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. SUMMARY:"Windows to the Soul; More Than Portraits" Reception
DESCRIPTION:Metro Gallery hosts watercolor portrait artist James Gayles. Windows to the Soul; More than Portraits is a love letter to the City of Reno\, dedicated to the Memory of Oliver X. The body of work shows a command of watercolor that clearly comes from a real relationship and comfort with the materials. Each piece draws you in deeper\, particularly through the eyes which James notes “are indeed the windows to the soul.” A central theme of James’ work is the search for cultural identity. This is evidenced in his portraits of African cultures and people of the African Diaspora. \n“I am committed to cultivating artists\, liberating experiences of the African and Black Diaspora through art and sharing my work with the world. My vision is to put beautiful\, uplifting\, and enlightening work out in the world and to inspire young and upcoming artists. I see art as a vehicle to educate\, by portraying ancestral icons who youth and all people can be proud of and admire.” -James Gayles \nJames Gayles is an Emmy Award-winning graphic designer and artist who specializes in watercolor portraits. James attended Pratt Institute in New York. James has won public art commissions from cities across the US and Asia. He is committed to cultivating artists and sharing his work.
