She launched the Honeycomb Project in 2024\, inspired by the natural\, yet complex shape and supportive structure of honeycomb. Since its humble start\, the project has grown to a collection of around 900 hexagonal panels\, adorned by over 500 individual artists\, across 14 states.\nAs Garlock sees it\, “at first glance\, a honeycomb may appear to be a simple geometric structure\, but a closer examination unveils its intricate design and remarkable precision. Composed of countless hexagonal cells\, each one functions seamlessly within the whole\, fulfilling specific purposes\, whether it’s storing honey\, providing a safe haven for the queen bee\, or nurturing the brood. This complexity serves as a powerful metaphor for community dynamics\, where individuals unite\, each contributing unique talents\, skills\, and roles that enhance the collective’s well-being and growth. This interconnectedness is built upon relationships\, shared experiences\, and common goals\, forming a robust foundation for resilience and development. But\, our skin is abundant. It has the\npower to regenerate and repair old wounds. People often mistake our skin for being\nmonotone\, different shades of one color. But\, if you pay enough attention\, you’ll see how\nthe light dances and refracts off our skin\, like radiant blessings from our ancestors. And if\nyou look closely\, for every red\, violet\, blue\, green\, or yellow hue\, there is a breadth of\nstories\, histories\, and lessons transmuted from the past to help us create brighter\ntomorrows.”\n“Of the Sol” is a collective of Black\, Indigenous\, and Artists of Color cultivating an\nintersectional space for all BIPOC artists. DESCRIPTION:VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System offers Veterans a chance to demonstrate their artistic talents in the visual arts at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center\, Gallery East and West. DESCRIPTION:It’s the process of not trusting and falling into doubt that feels like a slow death.\nWith flying\,\nthere is an inner knowing\,\na guiding light.\nThere is no fear\, no doubt\, because there is only love.\nLove governs form.\nWhat if I learned to find love in the unknown\, to find love within the process of uncertainty?\nWhat if falling was actually flying – it just takes a little longer to discover that form. \nCity of Reno City Hall\nMetro Gallery\nMay 19 – July 11\nReception\, Wednesday\, June 18\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nReno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Love Governs Form\,” a solo exhibition by 2025 Reno City Artist Jordyn Rae Owens. The show runs from May 19 – July 11\, 2025\, showcasing fine art photography and collage by Owens that offers a deeply personal and transformative reflection of her experience as a mixed race Black and Filipino woman born and raised in Reno. Her art practice is a contemplative process in which she utilizes photographic mediums to explore the past\, present\, and future self. By exploring her inner world\, her artwork demonstrates the powerful effects of self-reflection and the impact it has on the evolution of identity.\nFormer Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova describes that Owens’ art “reflect her journey of introspection and identity\, exploring the intersections of race\, place\, and personal history. Jordyn’s ability to convey such narratives through visual mediums makes her a standout artist and a strong representative of the dynamic and diverse culture we are working to build in Reno.” \nOwens won the Award for Excellence in Fine Art Photography at the Reno Tahoe International Art Show in 2022 and 2023 and was a finalist in 2024. She has also been the recipient of the Nevada Arts Council Artist Project Grant. She has previously had solo exhibitions at the Holland Project and North Valley’s Library in addition to numerous group shows. DESCRIPTION:March 17\, 2025- May 9\, 2025 Reception: Thursday\, April 17th\, 2025\, 5 – 7pm \nJesse James Ziegler is currently serving as Poet Laureate for the City of Reno; With a term spanning from January of 2024 to December of 2025. He is the Vice President of Spoken Views Collective and the Creative Director for Monday Night Poetry\, True Colors Poetry\, and Collective Breath Poetry Book Club. He is also a member of the Sierra Literary Cooperative\, Sierra Arts Literary Community and the Nevada Poetry Society. Additionally\, Jesse works as the Spoken Word/Poetry contributor to Reno Arts News. \nJesse was the first ever Poet in Residence for the Bruka Theatre and held that position for three consecutive seasons (27\,28\,29). His first collection of poetry FIVE (2019) was published and brought to life through their annual “New Works Festival.” Jesse has had work published in Nevada Humanities\, The Mill Valley Literary Review\, and Multnomah University Press. Jesse opened and hosted the world premieres of Brandon Leake’s original spoken word play ‘Insomnia’ (Winner of Season 15 AGT) and has been a performance artist at the annual Utah Arts Festival. He has served as a host\, judge and prompter for the Nevada chapter of the National Poetry Out Loud organization. This is Jesse’s first gallery exhibit of his work as Poet Laureate for the City of Reno. Poetry was Jesse’s first love\, and he’s honored to serve as the ambassador of the art form. Jesse believes Poetry is the language of bridge building\, activism\, catharsis\, edification and love. He intends to further support poets and poetry in our region through community building and community service. \n“Grit & Grace” is an exhibition that showcases both Poetry and Photography by City of Reno Poet Laureate Jesse James Ziegler. The show is an exploration of heart\, mind\, and landscapes in tempestuous times of transition. It demonstrates how individual efforts to build and serve community have ripple effects beyond our singular capacity for comprehension and compassion. Jesse’s poems are accompanied by his photography which compliments the overall exhibit by providing graphic representation and inspiration for the pieces of Jesse’s poetry.

SUMMARY:“Monumental Masks” Students of O’Brien Middle School
DESCRIPTION:Monumental Masks is an exhibition where students have been presented with the opportunity to allow their imagination to run wild. Each student was allowed to choose whatever materials they needed to create masks that either encapsulate their identity or tell a story. What they created were unique\, eye-catching pieces of art that showcase the imagination and intricacies of the mind of a child.\nEach mask evokes a diversity of human emotions and experiences. A total of 15 students came together to capture their individual essence through renditions of personal expression and self-discovery. There were no guidelines placed upon the creation of these masks\, which allowed there to be a true representation of authenticity in how students wanted to present themselves through their art.\nOur curated logo is meant to represent Peavine Mountain which is the most prominent mountain in our surrounding area here in Reno. On it\, you will see a variety of masks that are meant to represent the impact each person can have on their hometown with the ability to create with no limitations. Printmaking involves the use of an original object which\, with the use of ink and pressure\, can be used to produce multiple original prints. This exhibition is meant to show what usually remains unseen and explain some of the mystery of printmaking. \nLaika Press is a nonprofit Community Printmaking space focused on teaching and increasing the accessibility of printmaking for students and artists of all ages\, as well as fostering a more connected printmaking community in the Reno area. DESCRIPTION:September 23 – October 31\, 2024 \nEMERGE spotlights the works of up-and-coming young artists from Northern Nevada who are all active participants in the arts community at the Holland Project. Matthew Gavrilles\, Ana Cruz Hernandez\, and Salvador Porras have each been a part of the Holland Project for a number of years\, participating in art programs and contributing artwork to multiple group exhibitions. We have had the great privilege of seeing their work grow and evolve over this time and it is exciting to witness them define their aesthetic and voice as artists. We are thrilled to be able to share their work in McKinley Gallery East and look forward to seeing what is next on the horizon for each of these talented young artists! \nThe Holland Project is a non-profit\, volunteer-driven organization that produces more than 250 all-ages art\, music\, and cultural events annually in the Reno area. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. DESCRIPTION:Metro Gallery hosts sequin sculpture artist Beck Baumann “All That Glitters.” The body of work exhibits over 12 sequin sculpture pieces from varying projects spanning over 3 years. Each piece captures your eyes through the vibrant use of color and sparkle that depicts everyday objects from an ear-shaped handbag\, all the way to delectable food plates. \nJuly 29 – September 20\, 2024 Reception: Tuesday\, August 27\, 2024\, 5 – 7pm \n“Sequins are everywhere. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder.\nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art.\nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. After completing her degree\, she spent several years writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel. SUMMARY:“The National Veterans Creative Arts Local Competition”
DESCRIPTION:VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and McKinley Galleries \nExhibition: August 5 – September 13\, 2024 \nReception: Thursday\, August 15\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \nVA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and the City of Reno’s Arts and Culture Department have teamed up to offer Veterans a chance to demonstrate their artistic talents in the visual arts at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center Galleries. The local event is part of the 2024 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. The exhibition will run from August 5 – September 13\, 2024\, at McKinley Arts and Culture Center. \nVA medical facilities incorporate creative arts into their therapy programs to further the rehabilitation goals for both inpatients and outpatients. This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy and raises the visibility of the creative achievements of Veterans.
