SUMMARY:Grit & Grace: City of Reno\, Poet Laureate: Jesse James Ziegler
DESCRIPTION:March 17\, 2025- May 9\, 2025 Reception: Thursday\, April 17th\, 2025\, 5 – 7pm \nJesse James Ziegler is currently serving as Poet Laureate for the City of Reno; With a term spanning from January of 2024 to December of 2025. He is the Vice President of Spoken Views Collective and the Creative Director for Monday Night Poetry\, True Colors Poetry\, and Collective Breath Poetry Book Club. He is also a member of the Sierra Literary Cooperative\, Sierra Arts Literary Community and the Nevada Poetry Society. Additionally\, Jesse works as the Spoken Word/Poetry contributor to Reno Arts News. \nJesse was the first ever Poet in Residence for the Bruka Theatre and held that position for three consecutive seasons (27\,28\,29). His first collection of poetry FIVE (2019) was published and brought to life through their annual “New Works Festival.” Jesse has had work published in Nevada Humanities\, The Mill Valley Literary Review\, and Multnomah University Press. Jesse opened and hosted the world premieres of Brandon Leake’s original spoken word play ‘Insomnia’ (Winner of Season 15 AGT) and has been a performance artist at the annual Utah Arts Festival. He has served as a host\, judge and prompter for the Nevada chapter of the National Poetry Out Loud organization. This is Jesse’s first gallery exhibit of his work as Poet Laureate for the City of Reno. Poetry was Jesse’s first love\, and he’s honored to serve as the ambassador of the art form. Jesse believes Poetry is the language of bridge building\, activism\, catharsis\, edification and love. He intends to further support poets and poetry in our region through community building and community service. \n“Grit & Grace” is an exhibition that showcases both Poetry and Photography by City of Reno Poet Laureate Jesse James Ziegler. The show is an exploration of heart\, mind\, and landscapes in tempestuous times of transition. It demonstrates how individual efforts to build and serve community have ripple effects beyond our singular capacity for comprehension and compassion. Jesse’s poems are accompanied by his photography which compliments the overall exhibit by providing graphic representation and inspiration for the pieces of Jesse’s poetry.

SUMMARY:“Monumental Masks” Students of O’Brien Middle School
DESCRIPTION:Monumental Masks is an exhibition where students have been presented with the opportunity to allow their imagination to run wild. Each student was allowed to choose whatever materials they needed to create masks that either encapsulate their identity or tell a story. What they created were unique\, eye-catching pieces of art that showcase the imagination and intricacies of the mind of a child.\nEach mask evokes a diversity of human emotions and experiences. A total of 15 students came together to capture their individual essence through renditions of personal expression and self-discovery. There were no guidelines placed upon the creation of these masks\, which allowed there to be a true representation of authenticity in how students wanted to present themselves through their art.\nOur curated logo is meant to represent Peavine Mountain which is the most prominent mountain in our surrounding area here in Reno. On it\, you will see a variety of masks that are meant to represent the impact each person can have on their hometown with the ability to create with no limitations. With a colorful palette and my playful abstract style\, I endeavor to convey my reverence for and love of water. \nNature offers myriad wonders that inspire and fascinate\, yet few evoke such powerful emotions as the sight and sound of water. SUMMARY:We’ve Got An Inkling: “How To Print About It” Laika Press
DESCRIPTION:September 23 – October 31\, 2024 \nAn exhibition presenting prints by members of Laika Press\, accompanied by the blocks or plates that were used to make them. Printmaking involves the use of an original object which\, with the use of ink and pressure\, can be used to produce multiple original prints. This exhibition is meant to show what usually remains unseen and explain some of the mystery of printmaking. \nLaika Press is a nonprofit Community Printmaking space focused on teaching and increasing the accessibility of printmaking for students and artists of all ages\, as well as fostering a more connected printmaking community in the Reno area. We offer printmaking equipment\, supplies\, and education for public use. Located at 136 Vesta Street in Reno\, NV\, next to The Holland Project. We operate in a shared space with KWNK 97.7 FM and Oddtime Electronics. \nThe press is available for use by appointment.\nLaika Press is volunteer run\, so we’re always looking for passionate volunteers to help out at events\, workshops\, and to keep the space in order. DESCRIPTION:September 23 – October 31\, 2024 \nEMERGE spotlights the works of up-and-coming young artists from Northern Nevada who are all active participants in the arts community at the Holland Project. Matthew Gavrilles\, Ana Cruz Hernandez\, and Salvador Porras have each been a part of the Holland Project for a number of years\, participating in art programs and contributing artwork to multiple group exhibitions. We have had the great privilege of seeing their work grow and evolve over this time and it is exciting to witness them define their aesthetic and voice as artists. We are thrilled to be able to share their work in McKinley Gallery East and look forward to seeing what is next on the horizon for each of these talented young artists! \nThe Holland Project is a non-profit\, volunteer-driven organization that produces more than 250 all-ages art\, music\, and cultural events annually in the Reno area. Governed by its members\, volunteer boards and committees\, Holland seeks to propel Reno’s all-ages movement\, and wholeheartedly support and champion opportunities for young people in our community. \nHolland focuses on executing live music events monthly\, curating gallery exhibits\, hosting unique and affordable workshops\, and presenting special events and city-wide collaborations. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. DESCRIPTION:Metro Gallery hosts sequin sculpture artist Beck Baumann “All That Glitters.” The body of work exhibits over 12 sequin sculpture pieces from varying projects spanning over 3 years. Each piece captures your eyes through the vibrant use of color and sparkle that depicts everyday objects from an ear-shaped handbag\, all the way to delectable food plates. \nJuly 29 – September 20\, 2024 Reception: Tuesday\, August 27\, 2024\, 5 – 7pm \n“Sequins are everywhere. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder.\nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art.\nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. After completing her degree\, she spent several years writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel. DESCRIPTION:The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Backyard Radiance\,” a solo exhibition by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier. \nThe show runs from March 25 – May 17\, 2024\, showcasing photographs by Lanier that embrace both the marvelous and the mundane.\nThe artist reception will take place on Tuesday\, April 2\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nCity of Reno Poet Laureate\, Jesse James Ziegler\, will join Lanier in a collaborative and poetic performance. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public. \nOver the past twelve years\, Lanier has been posting almost daily photos from his life on Instagram\, converting it to a mobile gallery (of sorts). For this exhibition\, he draws from this archive\, bringing the digital photographs back into the physical realm. Lanier’s images often feel like echoes\, something that seems both familiar and new. Each one is well composed\, providing an enjoyable artistic image. Rather than alienating us through aesthetic formality\, the familiarity of the ordinary creeps in\, inviting us to reflect on our own marvelous/mundane moments. \nAs a window into this process\, Lanier shares\, “I intend “Backyard Radiance” to be a very local\, very idiosyncratic homage to the ordinary\, the day-to-day – which\, when attended to with a certain intention or reverence\, becomes something perhaps a little marvelous.”\nChris Lanier is a Teaching Professor of Digital Art at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, teaching both at UNR Lake Tahoe and the Reno campus. He has worked in a variety of media\, including multimedia performance\, digital animation\, web production\, and comics. The show will run from January 22\, 2024 to March 15\, 2024\, and the reception will be Thursday February 8\, from 5-7pm.\nThe exhibit features 22 photographs of Nevadans dressed to represent different cultural identities\, each paired with a photograph of the same person in “everyday” dress as they might appear at home\, work\, or enjoying recreational activities. These photo pairs have been combined on “lenticular two-flip” panels so that as the viewer approaches\, they see just one of the photos. As they begin to pass by the panel\, it “flips” to the other image as though by magic. The effect is created by interleaving the images on narrow strips that are refracted through an overlying lens to create the startling “two-flip” effect. Each image pair is accompanied by a statement in the model’s own words that speaks to some aspect of cultural community or identity.\n“This exhibit is a fun way to think about who we are as Nevadans in the 21st century\,” exhibit curator Rebecca Snetselaar\, who also photographed the models for the exhibit\, said. “Cultural identity is complicated. Most of us identify with more than one cultural community and we may express different aspects of that depending on where we are or who we are with at any given time.” Folklife\, folk arts\, and folklore all spring from cultural identity\, which comes from belonging to a social group. Family heritage — national or ethnic — often informs a person’s sense of self. Cultural identity also may derive from language\, gender\, religion\, age\, occupation\, and sense of place. Culture is something we share with others in a social group. What results is a personal journey of instinctual shape-making combined with audacious color palettes\, forming unexpected and energetic arrangements. \nThis series emerged as a response to frustration within the initial stages of my creative process for my next series. I had been grappling with a self-imposed expectation that my work needed more polish or less “strangeness\,” which only led to creative pressure and overthinking every decision. This led to a painful sketching process and rather boring compositions. I decided to stop forcing square pegs into round holes and instead followed my gut to sketch something from a natural state of flow. What transpired was exhilarating – playfulness\, movement\, energy\, and an elusive balance among the diverse shapes\, all while suggesting a hint of instability. These traits\, in conjunction with color\, remain at the heart of my ongoing artistic exploration and ignite my inner creativity. \nIn addition to my exploration of shape\, balance and color\, I aim to transport the viewer to an alternate realm\, one that is uniquely personal to each individual. While I have no specific realm in mind\, I envision it as a joyful and playful space. In many ways\, the artworks in “On Instinct” serve as psychological association tests. I invite you to embark on a personal journey when viewing each piece. Where does it take you? What do you see? Don’t overthink it. Just go with your instinct.

The body of work shows a command of watercolor that clearly comes from a real relationship and comfort with the materials. Each piece draws you in deeper\, particularly through the eyes which James notes “are indeed the windows to the soul.” A central theme of James’ work is the search for cultural identity.
