House of Waters\, incorporates elements of West-African\, jazz\, psychedelic\, indie rock\, classical and world music into their astonishingly unique sound. For sixteen years\, Max ZT (hammered dulcimer) and Moto Fukushima (six-string electric bass) have carefully crafted a combined voice. Their rare instrumentation allows for the two prolific composers to create a distinct sound\, and a compelling and captivating style. \nMax ZT\, a master of the hammered dulcimer\, and Moto Fukushima\, an innovative six-string bassist\, have released two albums on the Grammy Award-winning group Snarky Puppy’s GroundUp label. Their first album reached #2 on the iTunes World Music chart\, while the second hit #4 on the iTunes Jazz chart. Their latest project\, On Becoming\, features percussionist Antonio Sanchez. Max\, originally from Chicago and now based in Brooklyn\, began playing the dulcimer at age two and later expanded his repertoire by studying West African music in Senegal. Fukushima\, born in Kobe\, Japan and now based in NYC\, blends his background in Japanese traditional music with jazz to create a unique style characterized by finesse and power. SUMMARY:Performing Arts Series Presents: Tres Souls
DESCRIPTION:The beloved Los Angeles trio\, Tres Souls\, perform the vintage sounds and songs of the 1940s-1960s Bolero style that was popularized during the “Golden Era of Mexican Cinema.” Rocio Mendoza\, Roberto Carlos\, and Jesus Martinez have serenaded audiences all over\, with their own interpretations of a genre called “Bolero.” \nIn 2011\, Rocio\, Roberto\, and Jesus came together to form Tres Souls\, driven by their passion to both revive bolero music in Los Angeles and preserve its rich heritage. Each member of the trio brings a deep-rooted knowledge of traditional music\, inherited from their families and passed down through generations. Rocio Mendoza\, a dedicated performer\, expresses her love for art and serves as a bridge to cultural experiences of a Mexican immigrant. Raised working in agriculture with her family\, Mendoza followed in her parents’ footsteps as musician\, learning Mexican folk melodies from them. Roberto Carlos grew up surrounded by music\, heavily influenced by his family. He has been immersed in bolero music since he was 10\, thanks to his father’s influence. Jesus Martinez\, a music producer\, engineer\, and requintista (tenor guitar player)\, has been playing Latin folk music from a young age and further hones his skills by graduating from Berklee College of Music. Together\, Tres Souls is known for its authentic sound\, rooted in classical styles and inspired by the trio romántico tradition\, while each song carries their unique approach. \nTres Souls will be hosting an outreach event at North Valley’s Library on Wednesday\, February 12\, at 3:30 p.m. This free event offers a special chance to explore their expertise in performances that connect diverse cultural experiences. Featuring the distinctive timbres of the erhu (Taiwanese fiddle) and zhong ruan (lute)\, and the transcendent vocals of Mia Hsieh\, A Moving Sound has devised a unique and compelling style that is all their own – a Taiwanese whirlwind that veers between the meditative and the exuberant with irrepressible spirit. \nMia Hsieh and Scott Prairie\, the co-directors of A Moving Sound\, embody a unique blend of artistic backgrounds and cultural exploration. After meeting in New York and moving to Taiwan to build a life together\, Mia and Scott have merged their diverse experiences into a singular creative vision. Mia\, with her extensive background in theatre and dance\, infuses their performances with vibrant theatricality and emotional depth\, driven by her passion for merging music and storytelling to create immersive\, multi-dimensional experiences. Scott’s journey from music conservatory training on the horn to mastering traditional Chinese instruments reflects his dedication to cultural integration. He aims to innovate within the world of music\, crafting compositions that honor traditional roots while pushing the boundaries of contemporary sound.
