SUMMARY:NTI Traveling Exhibition "Find Your Folklife"
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting \, Find Your Folklife\, an innovative photo exhibit exploring cultural identity. Curated by the Nevada Arts Council Folklife Program to illustrate the vitality of folklife\, folk arts\, and folk communities that are resident in Nevada. The show will run from January 22\, 2024 to March 15\, 2024\, and the reception will be Thursday February 8\, from 5-7pm.\nThe exhibit features 22 photographs of Nevadans dressed to represent different cultural identities\, each paired with a photograph of the same person in “everyday” dress as they might appear at home\, work\, or enjoying recreational activities. These photo pairs have been combined on “lenticular two-flip” panels so that as the viewer approaches\, they see just one of the photos. As they begin to pass by the panel\, it “flips” to the other image as though by magic. The effect is created by interleaving the images on narrow strips that are refracted through an overlying lens to create the startling “two-flip” effect. Each image pair is accompanied by a statement in the model’s own words that speaks to some aspect of cultural community or identity.\n“This exhibit is a fun way to think about who we are as Nevadans in the 21st century\,” exhibit curator Rebecca Snetselaar\, who also photographed the models for the exhibit\, said. “Cultural identity is complicated. Most of us identify with more than one cultural community and we may express different aspects of that depending on where we are or who we are with at any given time.” Folklife\, folk arts\, and folklore all spring from cultural identity\, which comes from belonging to a social group. Family heritage — national or ethnic — often informs a person’s sense of self. Cultural identity also may derive from language\, gender\, religion\, age\, occupation\, and sense of place. Culture is something we share with others in a social group. It’s our folklife: our common values and beliefs\, the creative ways we express identity in a group\, the knowledge we share\, the objects that hold significance and meaning\, the activities we engage in as a community.\nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno and open to the public\, free of charge\, Monday-Friday\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Metro Gallery is accessible through City Hall’s main entrance on the 2nd floor of the City Hall parking garage located on the NW corner of First St. & Center St. To learn more about the exhibition\, visit art & culture at reno.gov. \nThe Nevada Arts Council is part of the Nevada Division of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Its mission is to enrich the cultural life of the state through leadership that preserves\, supports\, strengthens and makes excellence in the arts accessible to all Nevadans.

SUMMARY:Apex Concerts: “Extraordinary Imaginations” with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
DESCRIPTION:Apex Concerts is proud to partner with the nation’s premier chamber music organization — the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center — for a fun and bold program exploring the transformational time of the early 20th century\, an era of tireless innovation and limitless imagination. Whether it is Samuel Coleridge-Taylor diving into both his Sierra Leonean heritage and his use of African-inspired themes or the Venezuelan composer Reynaldo Hahn adopting the drama of the latest Parisian fashion of the 1920s and the language of his adoptive France. Witness the Belgian composer and virtuosic violinist Eugene Ysaÿe reflecting on the playing style of the Romanian violin prodigy George Enescu. The evening culminates with the magnificent Piano Quintet by the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch\, whose compositions are often described as reflective of his Jewish heritage\, with highly dramatic scores influenced by philosophical\, poetic\, and religious themes. SUMMARY:"Bigger Than Us" TMCC Painting and Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: December 18\, 2023 – February 9\, 2024 Reception: Thursday\, December 21\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the growth and work of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) students over the course of the Fall semester. \n“Bigger Than Us” features TMCC students from Art 231 Painting I and Art 211 Ceramics I. Under the guidance of professors Candace Garlock and Rossitza Todorova\, this exhibition unfolds as an exploration of themes that transcend the individual and embrace the universal. \nThe guiding theme\, “Bigger Than Us\,” challenged each artist to delve into introspection and contemplation\, urging them to consider their place in the vast tapestry of existence. Professor Garlock and Todorova fostered an environment where students grapple with notions of connection\, grief\, and hope\, translating these profound reflections into captivating works of art. \nThroughout this exhibition\, you will see the diverse perspectives of emerging artists as they are influenced by nature\, the companionship of animals\, and the vastness of the universe—all woven into the fabric of each artist’s narrative. These thematic threads invite you to reflect on the collective human experience. \n“Bigger Than Us” is a collective journey through the minds and hearts of emerging artists grappling with the universal questions that shape our existence. We invite you to engage with the artwork\, contemplate the themes\, and join us in exploring the boundless dimensions of their artistic spirit. \nThe Fine Arts program at TMCC offers several areas of visual art emphasis for students\, including art appreciation\, art history\, and studio art courses in ceramics\, digital media\, drawing\, figure drawing\, painting\, photography\, printmaking\, and sculpture. Most studio classes are taught at introductory and intermediate levels.\nGalleries West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:"On Instinct" - New Work by Ashley Gottlieb
DESCRIPTION:“On Instinct” is an exhibition of new work by Reno-based artist Ashley Gottlieb. \nThe exhibition will run from November 4 to December 31\, 2023 at the South Valleys Library Art Gallery in Reno\, NV. \nThe public is invited to an artist reception on Wednesday\, November 15 from 5:30-6:30 pm at the South Valleys Library. \nLearn more at the show at https://www.ashleygottlieb.com/portfolio-1/oninstinct \nContact the artist with inquires at hello@ashleygottlieb.com \nArtist Statement for “On Instinct”: \n“On Instinct” is a collection of artworks developed using an automatic drawing technique that allows my primal urge to create freewheeling\, nonsensical shapes to run wild\, all while continuing to take a thoughtful approach to uncover the composition’s balance through color. What results is a personal journey of instinctual shape-making combined with audacious color palettes\, forming unexpected and energetic arrangements. \nThis series emerged as a response to frustration within the initial stages of my creative process for my next series. I had been grappling with a self-imposed expectation that my work needed more polish or less “strangeness\,” which only led to creative pressure and overthinking every decision. This led to a painful sketching process and rather boring compositions. I decided to stop forcing square pegs into round holes and instead followed my gut to sketch something from a natural state of flow. What transpired was exhilarating – playfulness\, movement\, energy\, and an elusive balance among the diverse shapes\, all while suggesting a hint of instability. These traits\, in conjunction with color\, remain at the heart of my ongoing artistic exploration and ignite my inner creativity. \nIn addition to my exploration of shape\, balance and color\, I aim to transport the viewer to an alternate realm\, one that is uniquely personal to each individual. While I have no specific realm in mind\, I envision it as a joyful and playful space. In many ways\, the artworks in “On Instinct” serve as psychological association tests. I invite you to embark on a personal journey when viewing each piece. Where does it take you? What do you see? Don’t overthink it. Just go with your instinct.

SUMMARY:Reno Jazz Orchestra to Present Ellington\, Shakespeare in Such Sweet Thunder Concert
DESCRIPTION:Shakespearian actors will join the Reno Jazz Orchestra to perform the music of Duke Ellington’s “Such Sweet Thunder” concert on November 11 and 12\, 2023\, at the Good Luck Macbeth Theater in Reno\, Nevada. David A. Brennan\, DMA\, will be the Guest Music Director\, and the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s Jazz Workshop students will open the show. \nDuring the concerts\, the Orchestra will perform works by Remy Le Boeuf\, Les Hooper and Gordon Goodwin\, capped by a performance of Duke Ellington’s suite\, “Such Sweet Thunder.” The concerts will be infused with professional actors performing excerpts from plays and sonnets written by William Shakespeare. \nGuest Music Director David A. Brennan\, DMA\, is the first of four candidates for the permanent position of RJO Music Director who will be conducting the Orchestra over the next five months.\nTickets are $35 for adults and $10 for students. For details\, visit RenoJazzOrchestra.org or call (775) 372-6160. \n“Inspired by the works of Shakespeare\, Duke and co-writer Billy Strayhorn captured heroic\, comedic and tragic moments in a jazz suite\,” said Chuck Reider\, Reno Jazz Orchestra Board President. “Producing this program was a labor of love as much of the music had to be transcribed from recordings and partial sketches provided by the Smithsonian Institute. It’s a wonder to hear Shakespeare’s words followed by Ellington’s expression of those words: truly magical.” \nRJO Tribute to Jim Kidder for Lifelong Support of the Arts\, Education \nThe Orchestra presented a similar show in 2011 on the Nevada Museum of Art’s rooftop.\nThe idea to combine the music of Ellington and sonnets of Shakespeare was the idea of Jim Kidder\, a former Orchestra Board member and lifelong supporter of the arts and education.\nThroughout Kidder’s college years\, career and retired years\, Kidder was and continues to be an exemplary leader and supporter of education and the arts. \n“We will be dedicating the return of Such Sweet Thunder to the stage on behalf of Jim\,” said Reider.\nA pre-concert Reception to honor Kidder will be held on November 11 at the theater beginning at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are $50 (which include appetizers\, beverages and a concert ticket) and are available at RenoJazzOrchestra.org. \nThe Orchestra is collecting tributes from the general public to share with Kidder. Acknowledgments can be posted through the Orchestra’s website. \nHis unparalleled list of contributions includes decades as a leader and mentor. \nAfter settling in Reno\, Kidder’s boundless passion for the arts found him volunteering countless hours with the City of Reno Commission on Arts and Culture\, Order of DeMolay Legion of Honor\, Pack PAWS Board of Directors\, Reno Chamber Orchestra Board of Directors\, Reno Jazz Orchestra Advisory Board\, Reno Philharmonic Association Board of Trustees\, Reno Pops Orchestra Advisory Board\, and the University of Nevada\, Reno\, College of Liberal Arts & School of the Arts Advisory Board. \nKidder also served as the facilitator for developing strategic plans for the National Judicial College\, the Greater Reno Balloon Race\, the Reno Philharmonic Association and the Reno Pops Orchestra.\nHe was on Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center Foundation Board of Trustees and is an active Tahoe-Pyramid Trail Board of Directors member. \nHis contributions to life in the Truckee Meadows extend to many organizations\, to hundreds of blood donations\, and attendance at thousands of musical\, theatrical and sporting events. Supporting him\, Mary Ann Kidder is Jim’s lifelong partner and has made her own myriad contributions. \nAbout the Reno Jazz Orchestra \nThe Reno Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece contemporary big band in Northern Nevada. The band was formed in 1997 by musicians who performed with acts such as Frank Sinatra\, Sammy Davis Jr. and Natalie Cole in the casino showroom orchestras.
