Brüka Theatre presents Mark Sargent and Richard Winchester’s Christmas with the Crawfords\, which is also called “Mommie Dearest\, the Musical with a Holiday Theme\,” originated at the Theatre Rhinoceros in San Francisco. \nChristmas with the Crawfords takes place on Christmas Eve\, 1944\, and Joan has recently been “fired” from MGM because they consider her “box office poison”. Ms. Crawford is up for the lead in the Warner Bros. film Mildred Pierce\, but horror upon horror\, she must take a screen test first. Joan needs to rebuild her public relations\, so her friend Hedda Hopper decides to broadcast her live show from the star’s Brentwood mansion with Joan and kids in tow. \nDuring the live broadcast\, celebrity visitors like Katherine Hepburn and Mae West\, who apparently have lost their way en route to the big Gary Cooper party next door\, come dropping in at the house. \nThe legendary story of Joan Crawford began life in 1992 in an old converted fire department horse barn and subsequently has had packed houses in San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Portland and Seattle. The 90 minute campy musical played at the Chelsea Playhouse in New York in November 2001\, where it was nominated for a Drama Desk award. America’s premiere drag comedienne/singer Hedda Lettuce was originally the epitome of a creepy Joan with a mile high ’40s style black wig. SUMMARY:"Bigger Than Us" TMCC Painting and Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: December 18\, 2023 – February 9\, 2024 Reception: Thursday\, December 21\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nJoin us in celebrating the growth and work of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) students over the course of the Fall semester. \n“Bigger Than Us” features TMCC students from Art 231 Painting I and Art 211 Ceramics I. Under the guidance of professors Candace Garlock and Rossitza Todorova\, this exhibition unfolds as an exploration of themes that transcend the individual and embrace the universal. \nThe guiding theme\, “Bigger Than Us\,” challenged each artist to delve into introspection and contemplation\, urging them to consider their place in the vast tapestry of existence. Professor Garlock and Todorova fostered an environment where students grapple with notions of connection\, grief\, and hope\, translating these profound reflections into captivating works of art. \nThroughout this exhibition\, you will see the diverse perspectives of emerging artists as they are influenced by nature\, the companionship of animals\, and the vastness of the universe—all woven into the fabric of each artist’s narrative. These thematic threads invite you to reflect on the collective human experience. \n“Bigger Than Us” is a collective journey through the minds and hearts of emerging artists grappling with the universal questions that shape our existence. We invite you to engage with the artwork\, contemplate the themes\, and join us in exploring the boundless dimensions of their artistic spirit. \nThe Fine Arts program at TMCC offers several areas of visual art emphasis for students\, including art appreciation\, art history\, and studio art courses in ceramics\, digital media\, drawing\, figure drawing\, painting\, photography\, printmaking\, and sculpture. Most studio classes are taught at introductory and intermediate levels.\nGalleries West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:Apex Concerts: “Extraordinary Imaginations” with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
DESCRIPTION:Apex Concerts is proud to partner with the nation’s premier chamber music organization — the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center — for a fun and bold program exploring the transformational time of the early 20th century\, an era of tireless innovation and limitless imagination. Whether it is Samuel Coleridge-Taylor diving into both his Sierra Leonean heritage and his use of African-inspired themes or the Venezuelan composer Reynaldo Hahn adopting the drama of the latest Parisian fashion of the 1920s and the language of his adoptive France. Witness the Belgian composer and virtuosic violinist Eugene Ysaÿe reflecting on the playing style of the Romanian violin prodigy George Enescu. The evening culminates with the magnificent Piano Quintet by the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch\, whose compositions are often described as reflective of his Jewish heritage\, with highly dramatic scores influenced by philosophical\, poetic\, and religious themes. DESCRIPTION:Join 6-WIRE for a free\, family-friend\, interactive performance and Q&A. Learn how this ensemble brings Eastern and Western cultures together in creative concert productions that celebrate diversity while transforming the way classical music is experienced. Inspired by the historical connection between the erhu (the two-string Chinese violin) and the four-stringed Wester violin – both essential leading instruments from which the group takes its name — 6-WIRE was founded by violinist Xiang Gao and erhu master Cathy Yang. The two compose and perform contemporary\, classical\, chamber\, world and jazz music with remarkable pianist and composer\, Matthew Brower.

SUMMARY:NTI Traveling Exhibition "Find Your Folklife"
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting \, Find Your Folklife\, an innovative photo exhibit exploring cultural identity. Curated by the Nevada Arts Council Folklife Program to illustrate the vitality of folklife\, folk arts\, and folk communities that are resident in Nevada. The show will run from January 22\, 2024 to March 15\, 2024\, and the reception will be Thursday February 8\, from 5-7pm.\nThe exhibit features 22 photographs of Nevadans dressed to represent different cultural identities\, each paired with a photograph of the same person in “everyday” dress as they might appear at home\, work\, or enjoying recreational activities. These photo pairs have been combined on “lenticular two-flip” panels so that as the viewer approaches\, they see just one of the photos. As they begin to pass by the panel\, it “flips” to the other image as though by magic. The effect is created by interleaving the images on narrow strips that are refracted through an overlying lens to create the startling “two-flip” effect. Each image pair is accompanied by a statement in the model’s own words that speaks to some aspect of cultural community or identity.\n“This exhibit is a fun way to think about who we are as Nevadans in the 21st century\,” exhibit curator Rebecca Snetselaar\, who also photographed the models for the exhibit\, said. “Cultural identity is complicated. Most of us identify with more than one cultural community and we may express different aspects of that depending on where we are or who we are with at any given time.” Folklife\, folk arts\, and folklore all spring from cultural identity\, which comes from belonging to a social group. Family heritage — national or ethnic — often informs a person’s sense of self. Cultural identity also may derive from language\, gender\, religion\, age\, occupation\, and sense of place. Culture is something we share with others in a social group. It’s our folklife: our common values and beliefs\, the creative ways we express identity in a group\, the knowledge we share\, the objects that hold significance and meaning\, the activities we engage in as a community.\nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno and open to the public\, free of charge\, Monday-Friday\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Metro Gallery is accessible through City Hall’s main entrance on the 2nd floor of the City Hall parking garage located on the NW corner of First St. & Center St. To learn more about the exhibition\, visit art & culture at reno.gov. \nThe Nevada Arts Council is part of the Nevada Division of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Its mission is to enrich the cultural life of the state through leadership that preserves\, supports\, strengthens and makes excellence in the arts accessible to all Nevadans.

With contagious charisma\, a gorgeous voice\, powerful presence\, and captivating style\, this is a performance to remember. Kalani Pe‘a will perform alongside local hula dancers from Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokane. With his passion for perpetuating Hawaiian lan-guage and culture\, his music features his original and classic Hawaiian songs alongside his affec-tionate bilingual (Hawaiian/English) arrangements of his R&B favorites – a nod to the western music he grew up with. Kalani Pe’a made his New York debut to a sold-out audience in 2020\, the first Hawaiian artist to perform in Lincoln Center’s American Songbook. Self-described as “Hawaiian contemporary soul”\, Kalani Pe‘a was awarded a prestigious Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship in 2018 and named an Artist in Business Leadership Fellow 2019 by the First Peoples Fund.

SUMMARY:“Backyard Radiance: Photos and Videos of the Marvelous/Mundane" by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier
DESCRIPTION:The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Backyard Radiance\,” a solo exhibition by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier. \nThe show runs from March 25 – May 17\, 2024\, showcasing photographs by Lanier that embrace both the marvelous and the mundane.\nThe artist reception will take place on Tuesday\, April 2\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nCity of Reno Poet Laureate\, Jesse James Ziegler\, will join Lanier in a collaborative and poetic performance. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public. \nOver the past twelve years\, Lanier has been posting almost daily photos from his life on Instagram\, converting it to a mobile gallery (of sorts). For this exhibition\, he draws from this archive\, bringing the digital photographs back into the physical realm. Lanier’s images often feel like echoes\, something that seems both familiar and new. Each one is well composed\, providing an enjoyable artistic image. Rather than alienating us through aesthetic formality\, the familiarity of the ordinary creeps in\, inviting us to reflect on our own marvelous/mundane moments. \nAs a window into this process\, Lanier shares\, “I intend “Backyard Radiance” to be a very local\, very idiosyncratic homage to the ordinary\, the day-to-day – which\, when attended to with a certain intention or reverence\, becomes something perhaps a little marvelous.”\nChris Lanier is a Teaching Professor of Digital Art at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, teaching both at UNR Lake Tahoe and the Reno campus. He has worked in a variety of media\, including multimedia performance\, digital animation\, web production\, and comics. His work has been displayed\, performed and projected in New York\, San Francisco\, Japan\, Canada\, Britain\, Mexico and Serbia; his animation has screened at Sundance\, and won the Grand Prize for Internet Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/chrislanier
