SUMMARY:Murals & Music Festival | C5 presents: Exit Through the Gift Shop | FREE
DESCRIPTION:Exit Through the Gift Shop is a 2010 British documentary film directed by street artist Banksy. It tells the story of Thierry Guetta\, a French immigrant in Los Angeles who\, over several years\, filmed a host of street artists at work\, including Shepard Fairey and Banksy\, but failed to do anything with the footage. Eventually\, Banksy decided to use the footage to make a documentary\, which includes new footage depicting Guetta’s rise to fame as the artist “Mr. Brainwash”. In addition to narration read by Rhys Ifans\, the story is largely related by Banksy himself\, whose face is obscured and voice altered to preserve his anonymity. Geoff Barrow composed the film’s score\, and Richard Hawley’s “Tonight The Streets Are Ours” plays during the opening and closing credits. The film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival on 24 January 2010\, and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards. \nSince its release\, there has been extensive debate over whether the film is a genuine documentary or a mockumentary. When asked if the film was real\, Banksy simply replied\, “Yes.”

SUMMARY:"The First Street Show" Jutta Gietl\, April Gratrix\, Jessamyn Parker\, and Susan Handau
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: September 8 – November 6\nReception: Thursday\, October 22\, 5 – 7pm \n“An eye not told what to see\, sees more.” \n“Abstract artwork is open to the viewer’s interpretation and can elicit emotions\, memories\, and associations that work on a deep level to stir the soul\,” says City Artist Joanna Drakos. “I hope to do just that with my curated exhibition in Reno City Hall Metro Gallery.” \nThis curated group show is the penultimate realization of a goal Joanna set a few years ago: to showcase local\, non-representational\, abstract painting for Reno audiences. This exhibition is a crucial step towards engaging and educating the public on the artistry of this expressive painting style. Viewers will experience the diverse interpretation of abstract painting; displaying differing styles\, color palettes\, and the unique marks of each individual artist. \nMetro Gallery\, located on the first floor of City of Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. To learn more please visit: City of Reno\, NV \nMetro Gallery\nCity of Reno City Hall\n1 E First St\nReno\, Nevada 89501\nMonday-Thursday 9:00am-4:00pm\nFree of charge to the public\nFor more information please contact City of Reno Public Art at 775.334.6264

SUMMARY:Sacred Transformations: The Art of David Best
DESCRIPTION:For more than five decades\, David Best (born 1945\, San Francisco) has created art that bridges oppositions—darkness and light\, intuition and precision\, the abject and the spiritual—offering audiences profound experiences of beauty\, transformation\, and communal meaning. Sacred Transformations: The Art of David Best brings together significant works spanning the full breadth of Best’s career while featuring two newly commissioned installations: a soaring\, immersive shrine and temple constructed in the Museum’s two-story Newton and Louise Tarble Gallery. Long recognized as the visionary behind nine of the most iconic temples at Burning Man\, in addition to ten temples built in collaboration with communities across the globe\, Best has imagined a new shrine and temple concept for the Nevada Museum of Art that will offer a space for contemplation and reflection.
