The show runs from May 28 – July 19\, 2024\, showcasing a wide range of quilt genres. \nMay 28 – July 19\, 2024 Reception\, Thursday\, June 6\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nAppreciate quilted art as you encounter techniques such as hand quilting\, vintage-fabrics and patterns\, traditional designs\, modern creations\, classic Hawaiian techniques\, appliques\, and more. The expanse of styles on display reflects the diversity of the Truckee Meadows Quilters members. Diverse though they may be\, they have much in common; their generosity and their joy at sharing their love of quilting with others. \nTruckee Meadows Quilters encourages and promotes quilt making and related arts through education opportunities\, lectures\, demonstrations\, workshops\, and classes. Russell was born in Deadwood\, South Dakota in 1949 and raised in Spearfish\, South Dakota. His grandparents were cattle ranchers. He attended Morningside College\, Sioux City\, Iowa for two years with a major in theater before transferring to the University of Kansas. Russell’s first professional musical to be produced was Fourtune\, which ran Off-Broadway at the Actors’ Playhouse from April 27\, 1980 to November 23\, 1980. He wrote the book and lyrics for the musical Pageant with Frank Kelly\, which has an all-male cast that plays beauty queens. Among his stage musicals are e8\, Pageant and Side Show. Russell received a 1998 Tony nomination for Side Show for Best Book and shared a nomination with composer Henry Krieger for Best Score. The show was nominated as Best Musical. Russell was born in Deadwood\, South Dakota in 1949 and raised in Spearfish\, South Dakota. His grandparents were cattle ranchers. He attended Morningside College\, Sioux City\, Iowa for two years with a major in theater before transferring to the University of Kansas. Russell’s first musical to be professionally produced was Fourtune\, which ran Off-Broadway at the Actors’ Playhouse from April 27\, 1980 to November 23\, 1980. He wrote the book and lyrics for the musical Pageant with Frank Kelly\, which has an all-male cast that plays beauty queens. Television and film credits include Law and Order and Law and Order: Criminal Intent. Holly teaches theater at Truckee Meadows Community College and Shakespeare for Social Justice at High Desert State Prison. \nDavid Simpson – Technical/Facility Director \nDavid Simpson\, born in Reno\, Hug High School graduate\, learned the art of photography during five years in the Navy as a Photographer’s Mate aboard the U.S.S. Constellation. This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy and raises the visibility of the creative achievements of Veterans. DESCRIPTION:Metro Gallery hosts sequin sculpture artist Beck Baumann “All That Glitters.” The body of work exhibits over 12 sequin sculpture pieces from varying projects spanning over 3 years. Each piece captures your eyes through the vibrant use of color and sparkle that depicts everyday objects from an ear-shaped handbag\, all the way to delectable food plates. \nJuly 29 – September 20\, 2024 Reception: Tuesday\, August 27\, 2024\, 5 – 7pm \n“Sequins are everywhere. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder.\nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art.\nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. After completing her degree\, she spent several years writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel. Then she moved onto ‘painting’ with seed beads and yarn\, which became the gateway for working with sequins\, her primary medium.\nbeckbaumann.com \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Ely Haimowitz (1920-2010)\, a former piano professor at UNR\, served as the Cultural Officer of the United States Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK). He played a significant role in establishing the Korea Symphony Orchestra and facilitated the education of talented Korean classical musicians in the US during the early Cold War era. She will also perform compositions by Kim Sunnam with UNR keyboard faculty Dr. Bryan Chuan.

Sparks fly for two lonely hearts at the local blood bank while a wife and husband engage in an annual review of their marriage. An evening of humans being humans: How could it not be entertaining? DESCRIPTION:The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Slow Draw” a group exhibition with work by Jessica Hayworth\, Kelly Chorpening\, and Otis Poisson. Curated by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier\, the show runs from September 30 – November 22\, 2024\, with the reception on Tuesday\, October 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7pm. \n“Slow Draw” is a play on the Western-flavored phrase “quick draw\,” and nods to the various cultural movements grouped under the adjective “slow” – slow food\, slow fashion\, and so on. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. Particularly in the current visual environment\, where Artificial Intelligence can produce detailed images in a matter of seconds. there is a particular value to images made – deliberately\, thoughtfully\, and slowly – by a human hand. \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery is accessible through City Hall’s ground floor entrance on Virginia Street. Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage (NW corner of First St. & Center St.). Parking Validation can be found inside City Hall.
