DESCRIPTION:Nominated for the Best Contemporary Instrumental album at the 2024 GRAMMY awards\, House of Waters is at the forefront of jazz innovation. House of Waters\, incorporates elements of West-African\, jazz\, psychedelic\, indie rock\, classical and world music into their astonishingly unique sound. For sixteen years\, Max ZT (hammered dulcimer) and Moto Fukushima (six-string electric bass) have carefully crafted a combined voice. Their rare instrumentation allows for the two prolific composers to create a distinct sound\, and a compelling and captivating style. \nMax ZT\, a master of the hammered dulcimer\, and Moto Fukushima\, an innovative six-string bassist\, have released two albums on the Grammy Award-winning group Snarky Puppy’s GroundUp label. Their first album reached #2 on the iTunes World Music chart\, while the second hit #4 on the iTunes Jazz chart. Their latest project\, On Becoming\, features percussionist Antonio Sanchez. Max\, originally from Chicago and now based in Brooklyn\, began playing the dulcimer at age two and later expanded his repertoire by studying West African music in Senegal. Fukushima\, born in Kobe\, Japan and now based in NYC\, blends his background in Japanese traditional music with jazz to create a unique style characterized by finesse and power. SUMMARY:Humanities at Play: Votes for Women with Sarah Keyes
DESCRIPTION:Passed by Congress on June 4\, 1919\, and ratified on August 18\, 1920\, the 19th amendment legally granted women the right to vote in the United States. But achieving this milestone took more than seven decades of progress and protest; the American West in particular was crucial to organizers in the women’s suffrage movement. As part of our celebration of Women’s History Month in March\, learn more about women’s suffrage and this period in American history from historian Sarah Keyes (University of Nevada\, Reno) at The Glass Die on Wednesday\, March 12 from 6 to 8 pm. At this Humanities at Play in-person event\, Keyes will first share her work and research on the study of suffrage in the U.S. West before audience members play the board game Votes for Women (Fort Circle Games\, 2022) \nVotes for Women invites its players to join the suffrage movement\, organize support\, and campaign for victory across the 48 states that were called to ratify the 19th Amendment in 1919-1920. The game’s artwork is inspired by the classic designs used by suffragists themselves\, and features period art\, portraiture\, and historic documents. Campaigners move across the map to distribute political capital with a roll of the dice that will determine whether each state votes to ratify the amendment or opposes the Vote after three eras of play. Dig deeper into the history and maneuver through the critical choices that suffragists faced for a chance to guarantee equal franchise for all and win!

She captures a sense of surface and line from the landscape into her images. \nCCAI’s exhibit will be in Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery\, 2201 W College Parkway\, Carson City from December 18\, 2024 — April 9\, 2025. The gallery is open to the public\, Monday through Friday\, 8am – 5pm. The artist’s reception will take place on Tuesday\, February 25\, 5pm – 6:30pm\, with the artist introduction at 5:30 PM \nWithin the past several decades spent in Nevada and Arizona\, Hoff has been inspired by the vast spaces of the West. Stunning vistas and isolated landscapes have dominated the visual language in her work. She uses the desert flora to accentuate the solitude.

SUMMARY:Performing Arts Series Presents: Tres Souls
DESCRIPTION:The beloved Los Angeles trio\, Tres Souls\, perform the vintage sounds and songs of the 1940s-1960s Bolero style that was popularized during the “Golden Era of Mexican Cinema.” Rocio Mendoza\, Roberto Carlos\, and Jesus Martinez have serenaded audiences all over\, with their own interpretations of a genre called “Bolero.” \nIn 2011\, Rocio\, Roberto\, and Jesus came together to form Tres Souls\, driven by their passion to both revive bolero music in Los Angeles and preserve its rich heritage. Each member of the trio brings a deep-rooted knowledge of traditional music\, inherited from their families and passed down through generations. Rocio Mendoza\, a dedicated performer\, expresses her love for art and serves as a bridge to cultural experiences of a Mexican immigrant. Raised working in agriculture with her family\, Mendoza followed in her parents’ footsteps as musician\, learning Mexican folk melodies from them. Roberto Carlos grew up surrounded by music\, heavily influenced by his family. He has been immersed in bolero music since he was 10\, thanks to his father’s influence. Jesus Martinez\, a music producer\, engineer\, and requintista (tenor guitar player)\, has been playing Latin folk music from a young age and further hones his skills by graduating from Berklee College of Music. Together\, Tres Souls is known for its authentic sound\, rooted in classical styles and inspired by the trio romántico tradition\, while each song carries their unique approach. \nTres Souls will be hosting an outreach event at North Valley’s Library on Wednesday\, February 12\, at 3:30 p.m. This free event offers a special chance to explore their expertise in performances that connect diverse cultural experiences. DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the 83rd anniversary of Japanese American incarceration during World War II\, join Nevada Humanities and the Japanese American Citizens League for an evening of conversation about remembrance and the power of stories in the Japanese American community. \nThe evening begins with a presentation of audio excerpts from “The Magpie of Heart Mountain” — a 2021 episode from the podcast This Is Love featuring the story of Shigeru Yabu. Yabu was nine when he was incarcerated at Heart Mountain\, where he befriended a wild baby magpie whom he named Maggie. The program concludes with a discussion with members of the Japanese American Citizens League moderated by Meredith Oda\, associate professor of history at University of Nevada\, Reno.

SUMMARY:“Monumental Masks” Students of O’Brien Middle School
DESCRIPTION:Monumental Masks is an exhibition where students have been presented with the opportunity to allow their imagination to run wild. Each student was allowed to choose whatever materials they needed to create masks that either encapsulate their identity or tell a story. What they created were unique\, eye-catching pieces of art that showcase the imagination and intricacies of the mind of a child.\nEach mask evokes a diversity of human emotions and experiences. A total of 15 students came together to capture their individual essence through renditions of personal expression and self-discovery. There were no guidelines placed upon the creation of these masks\, which allowed there to be a true representation of authenticity in how students wanted to present themselves through their art.\nOur curated logo is meant to represent Peavine Mountain which is the most prominent mountain in our surrounding area here in Reno. On it\, you will see a variety of masks that are meant to represent the impact each person can have on their hometown with the ability to create with no limitations. The new year brings EVERY BRILLIANT THING written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donahoe opening January 31st in sub-Brüka for six more performances. Holly Natwora directed Mary Bennett in this interactive performance about getting to the other side of grief with a list that takes on a life of its own. The Sunday matinee begins at 2:00 pm. The matinee on February 2 is followed by a talkback with the company and audience. Currently\, Producing Artistic Director of Brüka Theatre & Theater Artist-in-Residence with Nevada Arts Council and Sierra Arts Foundation. Her Dorothy Parker…Shivering and Sighing won Best of The San Francisco Fringe Festival\, and was performed in NYC\, June\, 2017. Named “Best Actor” in Reno News & Review ten times. Mary runs The Carson City Ghost Walk and has appeared on screen in Nowhere Nevada and Dear George\, and been commissioned for solo shows with NAMI and The Nevada Museum Of Art. Mary is currently the drama instructor at Doral Academy. \nHOLLY NATWORA – DIRECTOR – Holly received her MFA from Columbia University in NYC and has acted in over 75 plays including two summers at Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival\, touring The Caucasian Chalk Circle in Berlin\, Germany and performing as Lady Macbeth in the first ever New York Fringe. Holly has also appeared in television and film\, most notably in Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Since moving to Reno in 2005\, she has performed or directed at the Brüka Theatre\, Reno Little Theatre\, Good Luck Macbeth\, and TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada. Holly currently teaches Theatre at Truckee Meadows Community College\, Sierra School of Performing Arts and Shakespeare for Social Justice at High Desert State Prison.
