Opera Explodes in Reno
Dolora Zajick Brings Her Opera Stars of the Future Here for Artown
~By Norm Robins~
Dolora Zajick and her Institute for Young Dramatic Voices (IYDV) will be gracing Artown with voices that make you hear the angels sing from July 13th through July 31st. Born of a desire to train young dramatic singers and help them reach the world stage, the Institute is the brainchild of Dolora Zajick, Rosemary Mathews, and Sarah Agler. It is an innovative 3-week intensive summer program of study for singers with large or unusual voices ages 15–36 at varying levels of vocal development.

Students study one-on-one with leading coaches and voice teachers who understand the nature of an adolescent voice unfolding to magnificence in a growing body. The Institute’s carefully selected experts from across the industry work in close collaboration not only with the students, but with each other, to provide a solid foundation of skills a professional singer needs to embark on and survive a successful operatic career.
In 2013, the Institute developed a partnership with the Wagner Society of Washington, DC. The result is the American Wagner Project offering role study, German language diction, and specialized coaching and classes for future Wagnerian singers as well as presenting annual Wagner concerts in Washington and a series of symposia.
On July 13th she will perform with rock star Dave Mason in a fundraiser for her IYDV 501c(3) Institute. Some of the young opera stars of tomorrow will join in the fun. This will take place on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe in Glenbrook, NV, from 5:30 to 9:30 PM. Ticket information can be had at
Then on July 20th from 12 PM to 4 PM, the IYDV will open a very special Masterclass to the public at Nightingale Hall at the University of Nevada, Reno, Church Fine Arts Building. Admission is free. Instructors are Luana DeVol, Director of the American Wagner Project, Thomas Muraco, Darrell Babidge, and Dolora Zajick.

And finally, on July 31st the Institute for Young Dramatic Voices will present its Stars of the Future in a concert of favorite arias, duets, and opera scenes. The performance will be from 6 to 8 PM in the Nightingale Concert Hall at the University of Nevada, Reno, Church Fine Arts Building. Admission is free, and there will be a reception after the performance.
Can anything be sweeter or more fun than having Ms. Zajick bring her opera stars of the future to perform here in Reno? For opera lovers or those who aspire to be opera lovers these are events not to be missed. Period.
