More about “Dead and Buried”

The play opens with Perdue, played by Alexandra Jobe, searching for answers in her quest to find her mother, but she discovers a job that may hold the key to all her questions. She sees an opportunity at a local graveyard in a small New England town as her way to satisfy her curiosity about the mother she never knew. Her life is lacking direction, and her search for her future has led her to this point.

Dead and Buried is a dark comedy that explores subjects such as betrayal, loss, and loneliness. However, the glue that binds all of this together is hope. Even though these are profound subjects, the playwright, James McLindon, blends the darkness with just enough humor without losing the profoundness of the subject.

Perdue finds herself working for Bid, played by Debra Lynn Hull, a rough, X military woman who has demons of her own, but an open heart ready to help those in need. Their relationship is certainly rocky as Perdue’s demons certainly color her every action.

To round out the cemetery team is Robbie, played by Jonathan Gastelo, a young man who lacks social graces, but does not lack desire for human connection. He finds himself quite taken with Perdue, but his lack of social skills becomes a barrier to achieving a genuine connection.

Dead and Buried is beautifully written, with a slow-burning feel that is engaging and very satisfying. Unlike some other dark comedies, the balance is perfect between the depths of the subject and the funny moments that bring the audience to tranquility.

What about the Performances

The cast, although small in number, is heavy with talent. These three actors bring a lot of emotion, laughs, and pure talent to Restless Artist Theatre’s intimate stage.

Alexandra Jobe, who plays Perdue, embodies the character of a young lost woman searching for answers about who she is and where she is going.

Debra Lynn Hull brings the character of Bid to life with a bit of a hard edge, but is not afraid to show the softness within this deep and multifaceted character.

Jonathan Gastelo brings his character to life as a young man with little direction but a lot of desire to live a fuller, more meaningful life.

These three breathe life into Dead and Buried with balance, humor, and heart.

The director, D.A. Mishler, strikes a balance between these three actors and the story, which is thought-provoking in its depth while also being easy to watch and uplifting.
