More about the Story
The time is 1943, towards the end of World War II. Family friends introduce Jack and Louise, and they become penpals. They have never met but feel a friendship building with each letter. Jack is an army doctor who takes care of the wounded soldiers as they return to the United States, and Louise is an aspiring dancer/actor who is trying to find her way in the world.
The two become fast friends, and their friendship grows with each letter. Jack and Louise desire to meet, but unfortunately, the time is never quite right for them, and it seems like a face-to-face meeting may never happen. But Louise is very determined and becomes friends with Jack’s family.
This is a very sweet love story and very emotional as well. There are twists and turns that seem to bring Jack and Louise together and then pull them apart. But they never lose their desire to get to know each other better.
Dear Jack, Dear Louise divides the stage into two sections, separating the characters as they write and read each other’s letters. This works so well and adds so much to the story and rhythm of the play.
This is a romantic love story taking place in a historical time. Perhaps this is one of Ken Ludwig’s best plays?

What about the Performances
Jonathan Gastelo and Libby Schipper are wonderful playing Jack and Louise. I am sure the story would have been less impactful if it had not been for these two actors, who are very passionate about this story.
Jonathan Gastelo is excellent at showing the audience his character’s fears and desires.
Libby Schipper is great at depicting her character’s desire to be a performer and find her future.
Restless Artist Theatre was going to put on Dear Jack, Dear Louise in the past, but ran into some technical difficulties. I am happy that they decided to offer us Dear Jack, Dear Louise.
