“Mean Girls- The Musical” The Story

Cady, who was homeschooled in Africa, starts attending an upscale high school and finds herself part of The Plastics, a clique of Mean Girls. She finds herself being used by her new friends to spy on the Plastics, but also sees that the members of The Plastics are troubled in ways unseen by many. Of course, there is a boy in the middle of the drama as well, and this is a complication that Cady is unprepared for.

Cady’s group of real friends try their best to put her on the right path after they see that the power of The Plastics has gone to her head, but there are lessons still to learn for Cady.

Any of us who went to high school saw how cliques take power and take advantage of others.  It’s a good thing that never happens once we’re in adult life.

Mean Girls-The Musical is a story of control and redemption with a bit of high school love mixed in, and it carries many lessons that we all need to be reminded of at times. The high-energy musical is engaging, uplifting, and extremely funny.

Be aware that in Mean Girls–The Musical, there are adult themes, alcohol use, and sexual situations.

The Performances

The actors are highly energetic; many of them come from the classrooms at the Sierra School of Performing Arts. It is wonderful to see these new actors finding their craft and expressing their excitement about being on stage. Mixed in with the newer actors are seasoned actors guiding them as they perform. This is a magical dynamic that adds so much to the audience’s experience.

Olivia Dease, who plays Cady Heron, keeps her high energy and deep performance solid throughout the entire two hours. Her portrayal of Cady is very engaging, so much so that I am sure the audience remembers times when they were in her character’s shoes growing up.

The entire cast is engaging, and there is never a dull moment. There are groups of actors who portray the different high school cliques we all knew when we went to school, from the jocks to the nerds and everything in between. They all played their parts brilliantly, as if this is what they lived in high school, and some of the actors are still in high school.

The Setting

The setting is an amphitheater at Bartley Ranch; summer evenings in this place are magical. Combine that with a funny and exciting play, and you have the perfect setting for a wonderful summer’s evening.

The Bottom line

Everything combined, the summer’s evening at Bartley Ranch, the wonderful performances of a funny and poignant play, and the company you bring to share the experience all blend for an evening you will relish. Topping all that off, there is a live orchestra to make the songs complete.
