Bottom Gun is the story that the makers of Top Gun wanted to tell in the 80s, Maybe? The story you want to see is Bottom Gun.

Bottom Gun: The Story

Most of us know the story of Top Gun, the tale of Maverick, a fighter pilot, and how he found his focus to be an adequate fighter pilot but lost his best friend in the process. Well, this is that story, but with a few twists.

As you can tell by the title, the twists come in a very Man-to-Man way. For those who may not know, Bottom is a term for the more passive person in a sexual relationship. There is a lot of man-to-man sexual energy but in a funny way. And with that energy comes quite a bit of eye candy as well.

There are gunshots, drug use, sexual situations, partial nudity, simulated sexual contact, and a bit of violence.

Here are some photos from GLM’s production of Bottom Gun

How about the Performances

The performances are delightful; the actors on stage have an incredible ability to convey their emotions through their facial expressions alone, but they also utilize their bodies effectively as well. It is a true joy to watch each of these performers tell this funny but profound story. The depth comes from these characters finding who they are and accepting themselves.

John Byerley plays Maverick, the key role in Bottom Gun. Byerley is dead on in his portrayal of Tom Cruise and combines that with his spot-on comedic timing. I look forward to seeing more of John Byerley on stage again.

The Writing

The writing team did a great job of fitting in little Easter eggs here and there, especially when it came to Tom Cruise’s theatrical history and a bit of his personal history as well. The references come “Fast and Furious,” wait, strike that: that’s the wrong movie. But yes, there are lots of references to films, such as An Interview with a Vampire and Eyes Wide Shut. If you are a fan of Tom Cruise and his movies, you will get these references, but if you are not a fan of Tom Cruise, you will enjoy the context in which these references are made.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line on Bottom Gun is simple: go into the theater expecting to have a fun time enjoying the actors on stage having a fun time. You will be treated to brilliantly funny writing thanks to the exceedingly creative writing team.

Trust me, Michelle and I had a wonderful time watching Bottom Gun.
