Reno Stage Scene; ‘Ride The Cyclone’ at Bruka Theatre

Ride the Cyclone, Karnak said, it will be fun. The Saint Cassian High School Chamber Choir did just that, and fun may not be the word they would use to describe the experience.

The Story of Ride The Cyclone

When the Saint Cassian High School Chamber Choir decided to take a trip to the amusement park, none of them knew the gravity of what was going to happen. There, they found an old-time, fortune-telling machine, The Amazing Karnak, and this seemingly innocent interaction would change the course of their lives. The machine suggested that they ride the cyclone. None of them knew this would be their last ride ever as Caporal beings.

In the opening moments of the play, we see the choir thrown into the air as the cyclone crashes down around them. However, don’t worry; this ending is just the beginning of what these teenagers are about to experience. Karnak has a plan for them and an intriguing offer as well.

Karnak tells them that there is a chance one of them may be brought back to life, but first, they must play a game. Karnak controls this game, as well as makes the rules and changes the rules as he sees fit.

During this game, the teenagers must delve into introspection and contemplation of who they are and who they wish to be, knowing that, except for one of them, they will never achieve anything more than they already have.

The story is tight and highly engaging, taking the audience on an emotional ride as they witness each character delve deep within themselves and express their feelings through song.

Ride the Cyclone has proven to be more than just a cult favorite in the theatre world; it is also a quirky, emotional tale of acceptance and self-love.

Ride the Cyclone is one of those plays that has a lot of meat on the bone, and trust me, Bruka’s production of Ride the Cyclone chews on every bit of that meat.

What About the Performances

What can I say about the cast?
The cast is as close to perfect as you could ever hope for. The performances are spot-on, and the singing talent on stage is flawless. But there is more than just the mechanics. There is the heart, and these performers give 100% of their heart, enthusiasm, and talent to this story and the audience.

There was a moment when the show ended, and silence fell. The audience let what they had just seen soak in. You could feel that moment of disbelief as the sheer perfection of what they had just seen was more than could be digested at that moment.

The Bottom Line

Treat yourself to an evening of community theater at its best with a story that will move you to tears. Bring someone you love with you and experience this together.
