September 11, 2001, is a date that will be etched forever in our minds. We know the events of that day that changed our lives forever. There were other stories of the people affected that day, and the musical, Come From Away is about many of those stories we did not know about.

After the attacks of September 11, the skies were essentially closed to air traffic, and the planes that were in the air were ordered to land immediately. A small town in Newfoundland had dozens of planes land in their airport with 7,000 people stranded in their small town of only 12,000 residents.

Come From Away is the story of how the residents of this small town came together to take care of the stranded passengers. Imagine the logistics of housing, feeding, and keeping that many people safe without forewarning or preparation. The residents’ reaction is heartwarming as they come together with one goal: to take care of those in need.

Come From Away has won many awards.

A “Best Musical” winner all across North America, the smash hit musical has won the Tony Award for “Best Direction of a Musical” (Christopher Ashley), 4 Olivier Awards (London) including “Best New Musical,” 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards (NYC) including “Outstanding New Broadway Musical,” 3 Drama Desk Awards (NYC) including “Outstanding Musical,” 4 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards (North American Tour) including “Best Production,” 4 Helen Hayes Awards (D.C.) including “Outstanding Production of a Musical,” 4 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards (Seattle) including “Excellence in Production of a Musical,” 6 San Diego Critics Circle Awards including “Outstanding New Musical,” 3 Toronto Theatre Critics Awards including “Best New Musical,” 3 Dora Awards (Toronto) including “Outstanding New Musical/Opera” and “Outstanding Production,” and the 2017 Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award (Toronto).

After seeing Come From Away, I can say these awards are well deserved. The individual stories within the main story are so compelling that you will find yourself rooting for the characters and feeling attached to the outcome. And these stories are true.

See Come From Away, and you will be moved to laughter, tears, and hope.
