Reno Stage Scene: ‘The Tempest’ at Bruka Theatre

The Tempest is part tragedy, part comedy, and part romance, all wrapped in arcane language that is both challenging and fun.

The Story of The Tempest

Prospero is a sorcerer and the rightful Duke of Milan. As Antonio’s ship passes by, Prospero conjures a terrible storm, causing his ship to crash on an island. This is the start of a very multifaceted story, made all the more interesting by the melodious language that is a trademark of William Shakespeare.

There is a romance partially spurred on by Prospero involving his daughter and a mortal young man.  Prospero uses his magic to influence situations around him with the help of Ariel. Add a few revelations as the story unfolds, and you have an entertaining and deep story.

Not to give you any spoilers, but in the end, Prospero does show his soft side.

The language is a bit arcane and perhaps hard to follow at times, but the story is powerful, and the fact that the audience must focus more on the story and the language will bring a different aspect to the telling of this powerful tale.

If you are a fan of William Shakespeare’s work, and who isn’t, you will enjoy this telling of The Tempest. The costuming is unique and not of the period, and there are a few added comedic elements that I found delightful.
