Reno Stage Scene; “Hook’s Tale” at Restless Artists Theatre Company

There are two sides to every story. Hook’s Tale is the other side of the story.

More about “Hook’s Tale”

Captain Hook has quite a story to tell in Hook’s Tale, filled with mermaids, ageless children, betrayal, discovery, and a bit of fairy dust to top it off.

The story starts with a young James Cook, who you know as Captain Hook, recovering from a personal loss and finding his way to the sea. Well, the sea finds him.

His journey with his shipmates takes him to an X on a treasure map, where the world becomes magick, and flying becomes possible. There, he meets another young boy who loves to play. This is where the story you know starts, but young Cook’s story is not the story you know.

James Cook’s story is funny and poignant with a dash of easter eggs sprinkled with fairy dust.

The story is fun, the writing is tight, and, under the direction of Doug Mishler, the actors bring the tale to the stage in a way that will captivate you.

I don’t want to say too much so that I don’t spoil the surprises and Easter eggs.

What about the Performances

The cast is funny, with the comedic timing that will leave your face sore from laughing. Even though we saw Hook’s Tale on a rehearsal night, the cast was smooth, and the production was impressive.

Scott Hermes is splendid as James Cook, bringing vulnerability and determination to the role. He is generous to his castmates as well, and that adds to the joy of Hook’s Tale.

The rest of the cast play multiple roles, adding to the play’s fast pace.

I am also giving a shoutout to Debra Lynn Hull, who plays Smee with the enthusiasm of a child.

How about the Set?

The set is so good, you will smell the salty air and bring your Dramamine. Well, I may exaggerate just a bit about the Dramamine, but for a small stage, RAT truly performs miracles.

The Bottom Line

Hook’s Tale is family-friendly and so much fun, fitting well in the intimate space at Restless Artists Theatre Company.

For an entertaining evening of live theatre, go see Hook’s Tale.

And That’s the Bottom Line!
